For the role of Senior Director of Data Science and AI, we are looking for a versatile leader who can provide strategic leadership, team development, and technical direction to multiple data science and artificial intelligence teams at McGraw Hill, while collaborating with diverse stakeholders across the enterprise and optimizing teams’ performance.  This is a remote position open to applicants within the United States.


What you’ll do:

  • Develop and implement a vision and strategy for how DS/AI can support different disciplines within MH School (learning design, product, sales, marketing, finance, and customer experience) in ways that advance overall business goals and objectives.
  • Build, guide, and mentor highly self-directed teams of data scientists, psychometricians, and data analysts. We are specifically looking for someone who can help our team leads reach the next level in their career. This involves hiring and training top talent, providing guidance and support, fostering a collaborative and innovative work environment, and ensuring that members’ expertise is fully leveraged.
  • Track the latest advancements in analytics, data science, psychometrics, and artificial intelligence. This includes understanding and applying cutting-edge techniques, tools, and psychometric theories to solve complex business problems and to enhance assessment quality, validity, and reliability.
  • Oversee the work of several analytics, data science, and psychometrics teams, including
    • Developing and implementing statistical and psychometric models, predictive analytics, and machine learning algorithms
    • Analyzing large and complex datasets to extract actionable insights, inform dashboards, and drive data-driven decisions
    • Using AI to support content creation and improve the student and teacher experience
    • Applying cutting-edge techniques and tools to improve assessment methodologies
  • Collaborate with stakeholders in various departments to identify data, assessment, and AI needs; define project requirements; and ensure that data science and psychometric initiatives are aligned with business objectives. This includes presenting findings and recommendations to senior leadership and other key stakeholders, as well as working closely with product, engineering, marketing, and customer success teams to ensure data-driven decision making and the development of effective assessments.
  • Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics to evaluate the effectiveness and impact of data science, psychometrics, and AI initiatives. This involves monitoring and reporting on progress, identifying areas for improvement, and making data-driven recommendations for optimization.

We’re looking for someone with:

  • Advanced degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) in a quantitative field such as Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Psychometrics, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related field.
  • Excellent leadership and management skills, with a track record of successfully leading and developing high-performing data-science teams.
  • Extensive experience (10+ years) in the fields of data science, AI, and/or psychometrics, with a focus on statistical modeling, machine learning, assessment development, and data analysis.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to effectively communicate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Exceptional strategic thinking and cross-functional collaboration skills.

The pay range for this position is between $180,000-$250,000 annually; however, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and location. An annual bonus plan may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical and/or other benefits, depending on the position offered.
