We’ve become a bit obsessed with the notion of hiring cracked engineers at PostHog. When we say cracked, we mean people who: 🙋♀️ Take extreme ownership of ideas – This means driving ideas to completion, even when others need convincing. 😄 Stay optimistic at all times – Cracked engineers aren’t intimidated by change, or new ideas. They help new ideas get off the ground that might otherwise die in a committee somewhere. 🤩 Make people feel excited and energized – Every conversation with a cracked engineer should generate enthusiasm. Cracked engineers build people and their ideas up, and are generally perceived as very helpful. 😎 Behave in a completely authentic way – Cracked engineers don’t play politics – their work does the talking. 👷♂️ Apply themselves to the craft – Joy comes from the craft itself, not creating shareholder value. Remote work can really work. But you’ve got to do it right. Like so many people, I started working remotely at the start of the pandemic. I was an editor for WIRED in London and it was a tricky transition for the whole team. But we made it work and we did heaps of incredible journalism in challenging circumstances. As restrictions lifted, we were asked to come into the office on certain days. That, again, was a tricky transition. In July 2022, my family and I moved to Montréal and I kept working for WIRED, but this time I was full-time remote. In fact, I was the only person working for WIRED in all of Canada. I learned so much as a manager and colleague during that time. Since moving to PostHog, it’s been eye-opening to see how a company designed around remote work operates. The deep work, the focus on transparency, the autonomy. It’s a great model of how to make remote working actually work. This week, I wrote about how it’s done – complete with some great examples from GitLab, Doist, Automattic, Buffer, and, of course, PostHog.
