Introduction

Spoiler Alert is seeking a Business Analyst with excellent critical thinking skills to join our growing Data Team. Our strong and growing customer base of globally-recognized brands is committed to eliminating food waste and the Business Analyst will enable this mission by creating and maintaining analytical dashboards that are an integral part of our product. This is a highly cross-functional role that will partner closely with our Customer Success, Customer Support, and Product Teams.

Reporting to the Lead Data Analyst, the Business Analyst will provide business value to our customers as the primary maintainer of dashboards embedded in our product. The role also includes facilitating insight generation as the data expert supporting the Customer Success team’s technical data investigations.

The ideal candidate will possess an extreme sense of urgency, high degree of intelligence, and an aptitude for navigating a fast-paced environment with evolving objectives and solution offerings. 

Responsibilities

The Business Analyst will be an advanced user of Looker who excels at delivering descriptive analytics via dashboards with a relentless focus on accuracy and data security. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to and eventually take ownership of in-platform analytical reporting, one of our core product features.

  • Uses Looker to build and edit Looks and Dashboards; makes minor LookML edits and partners with other Data Team members on more complex changes
  • Maintains and supports the suite of dashboards displaying descriptive analytics within our core product; builds new dashboards as needed
  • Partners with our Customer Success team to understand nuanced customer dashboard requirements
  • Builds, maintains, and supports core internal business dashboards and provides support for data users doing their own data explorations
  • Partners with our Customer Support team to oversee automated data alerts and scheduled reports in Looker
  • To support our Customers, completes technically complex data investigations periodically using Looker, Google Sheets, and other tools as needed like Google BigQuery (GBQ) and Python
  • Responsible for reliability and accuracy; collaborates with Customer Support on any emergent reporting inquiries

Requirements

Skills needed on day 1

  • Experience building reports in a Business Intelligence platform such as Looker, Looker Studio, Power BI, Tableau, Snowflake etc.; Looker preferred
  • Basic understanding of version control tools such as Git and its use in software development
  • Extremely strong critical thinking skills, particularly as it pertains to triaging bugs and reviewing dashboard changes; ability to understand how reports rely on underlying systems (GBQ, DBT, MongoDB) at a conceptual level for ensuring accuracy and reliability
  • Strong systems thinking skills around entertaining multiple hypotheses/options before identifying the best path forward
  • High attention to detail; experience delivering work in a context where accuracy is essential
  • Strong quantitative skills; experience working with data sets to distill metrics and insights
  • Thoughtful design of Dashboards and Data Visualization elements to facilitate gleaning of insights
  • Strong communication skills for collaboration; ranges from technical communication with Software Engineering to deep content discussions with Customer Success
  • Ability to be productive in a high-paced environment with multiple active threads vying for attention; follows prioritization
  • Good decision making around when to escalate issues and involve additional team members

Skills needed that can be learned on the job

  • Understanding of the Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) manufacturing supply chain and liquidation industry
  • Introductory SQL, GBQ, and LookML; experience a plus, but not required
  • Additional Git proficiency
  • Subject matter expertise on advanced use of Looker
  • Mastery of the custom metrics Spoiler Alert has defined for the CPG liquidation market; could grow into defining new metrics and contributing to data modeling
