Leadership does not reflect the demographic composition of the U.S. nonprofit sector. This is just one finding from our new report, which is the most comprehensive study on the topic. Research over the last 10 years has shown that funders often cause as many problems as they solve. These “funder-created obstacles” are a barrier to nonprofits achieving their intended impacts. Emily Teitsworth and Kate T. of the Honnold Foundation share steps they've taken to improve their grantmaking, based on trust-based philanthropy. These include: -Annual open calls for proposals: They offer equitable access to funding opportunities that don’t depend on personal relationships. They eliminate the need to be part of the “in” crowd to receive funding. -Accessible and transparent applications: Their application form is simple, and the process is laid out clearly so applicants know exactly what to expect. -Project-based, unrestricted, and multi-year funding: They encourage and trust these partners to use the funds for what they know they need and to adapt their projects as circumstances evolve. -Reduced reporting requirements and shared metric development with grantees: By collaborating on what they measure, Honnold Foundation makes sure that the information helps all stakeholders and tells the story of both expected and emergent impacts. Donors can increase their impact when they pool their money. But with these philanthropic collaboratives both asking for and making donations, measuring effectiveness and gathering feedback is key. Mariah Rich Collins and Erika Caballero Montoya of The Bridgespan Group explore a few promising ways that these collaboratives can measure impact, without bogging down nonprofits with more paperwork. This matters because household wealth for homeowners is 44x that of renters. According to U.S. Census data, women are paid just 78 cents for every dollar paid to men (and it's even worse for BIPOC women). On average, Black-led nonprofits operate with revenues 24% lower than white-led ones. That's a $20 million funding gap. Lauren Brathwaite, content editor at Candid, digs into Giving Gap's newest report, the State of Black Nonprofits Report: 2024. She shares highlights from the report, including: attributes of Black-founded nonprofits, the importance of funding them, implications of the funding gap, and how they can best be supported.
