Do you recognize any of these untranslatable idioms? Idioms are a tough nut to crack for translators — you really have to think outside the box. Literal translations just don’t work. You need to know the local lingo, understand the context, and come up with a translation that captures the same meaning without sounding too stiff. Let us know the hard-to-translate idioms you've encountered in the comments below. BTW, we’re going to work "sliding in on a shrimp sandwich" into our conversations from now on, even if it doesn't make much sense in English. 🌍 🏘 Welcome to our Global Village. 🔽 Each month, we’re taking you on a city tour with a Lokaliser as your guide. You’ll discover their favorite landmarks, some local tips, and foods you may – or may not – have heard of. Excited to dive into the many cities our Lokalisers call home? 🇱🇻 First up, Anatoly Vjalihs shows us around the beautiful city of Riga. Also where Lokalise was born! 🏰 Riga is a city of contrasts, where you find medieval buildings, 18th and 19th-century wooden architecture, Art Nouveau buildings, modernist architecture, and typical 20th-century block districts, all thanks to the city’s rich history. Love food? 🥐 There are plenty of bakeries that serve great croissants, buns, and bread: Mikla, Mulberry. ☕ Coffee shops where you can spend time reading a book: Kalve, Cafeterius, Rocket Bean Roastery, and Miit. 🍽 Many cool restaurants such as John (named after John Kennedy, who visited the building in the 1930s), Snatch, Riviera, Space Falafel, and a few nice fish places: COD, Tails, Catch. 🍸 Wind down in Gimlet with Scandinavian-inspired cocktails or explore Mañana. 👨🌾 Latvia is famous for local farming, so we have great farmers markets: the biggest one is the Central Market, located in zeppelin hangars, and the small and cozy Agenskalns district market. 🖼 Love art? Visit the National Art Museum, which features Latvian art from different periods, the art museum Riga Bourse, the contemporary art museum Zuzeum, and the Rothko Museum in Daugavpils Fortress with original artworks by Mark Rothko (located in Daugavpils, a 3-hour drive from Riga). Consider going to... ⛵ The coast. Visit the seaside city of Jurmala or take the train to more beautiful and wild coasts in Ragaciems or Saulkrasti. 🏘 Small cities like Kuldiga or Cesis, or Rundale Palace. 🍃 Kemeri National Park with its diverse wetlands What to bring home? 🍞 Rye bread. We have the tastiest rye bread in the world. You will find it in every grocery store and supermarket. The one I like is Lači bread with carrots. What to try? 🍧 Try to find one of our most famous national desserts: “Vecrīga” (translates to “Old City”). The recipe is simple: sweet cottage cheese covered in dough. When to travel? ☀ One of the best times to visit Riga is in the summer when everything blossoms ☃️ Alternatively, if you want to experience a real winter, go in December or January when everything is covered in snow. But be prepared, sometimes temperatures drop to below -30 Celsius. Are you from Riga? Drop more tips in the comments below. #travel #local #localization #globalvillage

🔔 🛍 A warning to all global eCommerce stores! 👇 When a user arrives at your site, there's always a default language. ✅ So you prompt them to confirm their language and where they're shopping. ✅ This helps personalize their experience with market-specific elements. Let's say they don't confirm and request to be routed to choose another language... ❌ And they see a bunch of flags. Flags may make some users uncomfortable because they may not reflect all the languages that the site is available in. Using the UK flag to represent English, excludes all other locations where English is commonly used. ❌ ❌ ❌ So, instead, you label your language channel as 'choose country'. This is a huge geopolitical nightmare. In 2018, Marriott Hotel's website was shut down by the Chinese government because Hong Kong, Taiwan, Tibet, and Macau were listed as stand-alone countries. So what should you use? Swipe right for the answer! 🇦🇹 🇧🇷 🇧🇻 🇨🇦 🇫🇷 🇳🇱 🇳🇮 So many unknowns... That's why many marketers dislike dealing with markets where they don’t speak the language or understand the culture. Some go out of their way to avoid them entirely. While it’s good to take precautions to protect your brand, localization doesn’t have to be intimidating. Check out this list of resources for marketers to help you move past the “foreign fear factor” that can block growth in other countries:  https://lnkd.in/ex3XEeeW.. 📽 Dune is not only captivating audiences visually, but also linguistically. The film features the invented #Fremen language, built on entirely new linguistic principles. The effort to create a language highlights the power of language in storytelling, especially in the realm of science fiction. It draws us deeper into the experiences of characters and cultures, creating a level of authenticity and immersion rarely seen in Hollywood, while also setting a new benchmark for sci-fi films. 💡 Though the Fremen language hasn’t yet been adopted as an official language, we might just be tempted to ask our product team to add it to our roadmap of translatable languages.
