To kickstart adoption of Newsela ELA, Benjamin Banneker Academy introduced a Newsela 30-Day Challenge across the school’s 3rd through 8th grade classes. Twice a week, every student read a Newsela article and completed the article’s four-question quiz. “We chose Newsela because of the complexity of the texts, and accompanying quiz questions. It provides the rigor and consistency students need to answer higher-level questions," said Bianca Rouse, Literacy Coach. Through a consistent 💪 and structured 🗓️ approach to using Newsela twice a week, educators at Benjamin Banneker Academy were able to help address the varied needs of their students while enabling literacy gains through content that spoke to student interests. When Garland ISD's elementary team needed engaging and accessible literacy resources to support both their English-speaking and bilingual classrooms, they decided to use Newsela ELA to support literacy instruction across the district. 📑 They created a resource document for teachers that highlighted the Newsela ELA texts available to support each unit, with details on when to use them and with which students. 💯 When they received the district performance data from state testing on students’ extended constructive responses, the literacy team was thrilled. 🏅 “We’re so proud of our scores. Our writing scores outperformed the state and the region at every grade level in English and in Spanish.
