  • With generative #AI often advancing faster than the safeguards needed to protect at-risk communities, children are particularly vulnerable. But amidst these challenges, here's a story of remarkable collaboration between philanthropy, big tech, and tech-forward members of civil society. Misuse of generative AI tools by bad actors has profound implications on the fight to prevent the proliferation of child sexual abuse online. Advocates have already seen it impede efforts to identify victims, and create new ways to victimize and re-victimize children. Recognizing the scale and need inherent in the challenge, Patrick J. McGovern Foundation partners Thorn and All Tech Is Human took action quickly. Over a handful of months, working collaboratively with leading AI companies, including Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Meta, OpenAI, and others, they developed Safety By Design–a set of AI development principles that guard against the creation and spread of AI-generated child sexual abuse material. Adopted publicly today by ten companies, this set of principles creates a pathway to protect children and demonstrate how ethical considerations and product innovation can sit hand in hand.  Kudos to Julie Cordua, Dr. Rebecca Portnoff, David Ryan Polgar, and all of the ethically grounded engineers, executives, and child safety advocates involved on this important milestone. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gjqQkKqm

📢 CAIDP and UNESCO Enter Historic Agreement to Advance AI Ethics (April 18, 2024) Today Gabriela Ramos, Assistant Secretary for UNESCO, and Merve Hickok, President of the Center for AI and Digital Policy, signed a Letter of Intent to promote AI technologies that "are at the service of people and sustainable development." The agreement marks a historic partnership between UNESCO and civil society in AI policy. After the adoption of the UNESCO Recommendation on AI Ethics in 2021, CAIDP promoted the UNESCO standard in its AI policy courses, providing certifications to students in over 100 countries. CAIDP also analyzed the endorsement and implementation of the UNESCO Recommendation as key factors in evaluating national AI policies and practices in the annual comparative study, The AI and Democratic Values Index. CAIDP welcomed the decision of the United States to rejoin UNESCO, citing the need for a global approach to AI governance. And Gabriel Ramos received the 2024 CAIDP AI Policy Award. In remarks on the UNESCO Recommendation at the session in Washington DC, Gabriela Ramos emphasized the importance of "universality" in bringing countries together for a common purpose and ensuring that countries are invested in beneficial outcomes. Both UNESCO and CAIDP acknowledged the support of Vilas Dhar and The Patrick J. McGovern Foundation, which have been at the forefront of efforts to promote ethical AI around the world. #aigovernance #aiethics #aipolicyleader Lorraine Kisselburgh Marc Rotenberg Karine Caunes Dr. Pablo Molina Larissa Zutter Doaa Abu-Elyounes Len Kennedy Ivan F. The more we create space for all communities to explore, test, and build with AI tools, the better equipped they'll be to insert their vision for a human-centered future into the conversation about how this technology will shape our society.  At the Skoll World Forum last week in Oxford (my first visit after so many years in the social impact sector!), I joined Jim Fruchterman, Fred Swaniker, and Amanda Renteria for a panel on the promise of AI for impact-driven organizations, and later led an AI 101 session for a group of leaders in the Skoll community. My message was the same in both conversations: this is a time for nonprofits to claim a seat at the table. At The Patrick J. McGovern Foundation, we see urgency in this particular moment of transformation not because machine learning will revolutionize the delivery of every social intervention (though we know it can and will for many). And not because generative AI is the solution for every operational challenge a nonprofit may face (though it’s already proving to be a capacity-expanding tool for many resource-constrained organizations). Instead, against a backdrop of technological advancement that has often overlooked the needs of the most vulnerable, we see a need to put nonprofits and civil society on their front foot. To bolster communities’ own agency to decide when and how to use AI, so that this transformation happens with them, not to them. I hope we took a small step in that direction last week. Thank you to Don Gips, Marla Blow, Vanessa Wai, Jess Fleuti, and Ynis Isimbi for the invitation. You’ve built such a vibrant community of leaders--the Skoll team serves them well!

  • Advancements in #AI are revolutionizing healthcare, but safeguards are critical to supporting the intentional design of AI-enabled healthcare that works for all. In a recent paper by the National Academy of Medicine, “Artificial Intelligence in Health, Health Care, and Biomedical Science: An AI Code of Conduct Principles and Commitments Discussion Draft,” a team of editors unveil an actionable roadmap for responsible AI integration. Drawing from extensive research, the roadmap outlines ten Code Principles and six Code Commitments for harnessing AI's potential to maximize human health and well-being while minimizing potential risks.   Read the full paper: https://lnkd.in/evuhGBEe

  • Women hold a unique place in the healthcare ecosystem – both as providers of care and as individuals with unique health needs across their lifetimes. And yet, our health systems continually overlook them: Women spend 25% more of their lives in debilitating health than men, according to a report from the World Economic Forum and McKinsey Health Institute. As #AI revolutionizes healthcare, how can we ensure that these technologies are leveraged to appropriately advance, not undermine, women’s health? At 9 a.m. ET on April 17, PJMF Digital Health Strategist Rebecca Distler will join Dr. Neha Verma, Co-founder and CEO of Intelehealth, a non-profit working to improve health access for women in rural and underserved communities through telemedicine and AI-enabled platforms. Together, they’ll explore the existing inequities in providing essential primary care services, as well as opportunities – and barriers – to leveraging emerging innovations.
