We continue our ongoing series about carbon in the Amazon based on cutting-edge data from Planet In part 1, we introduced a new global dataset (Planet’s Forest Carbon Diligence) with wall-to-wall estimates for aboveground carbon at an unprecedented 30-meter resolution between 2013 and 2022. In part 2 , we highlighted which parts of the Amazon are currently home to the highest (peak) carbon levels. In part 3, we showed key cases of carbon loss (deforestation) and gain across the Amazon. A key finding from this series is that the Amazon, while still containing 56.8 billion metric tons of aboveground carbon, is currently teetering between a carbon source and sink. Here, in part 4, we focus on the importance of aboveground carbon in protected areas and Indigenous territories, which together cover nearly half (49.5%) of the Amazon We find that Amazonian protected areas and Indigenous territories contained 34.1 billion metric tons of aboveground carbon, or 60% of the Amazon’s total, as of 2022. Importantly, in the ten years between 2013 and 2022, they functioned as a significant carbon sink (gaining 257 million metric tons), narrowly offsetting the emissions in the rest of the Amazon Regarding results by country, protected areas and Indigenous territories were significant carbon sinks in Colombia, Brazil, Suriname, and French Guiana. With this data, we can also analyze aboveground carbon for each individual protected area and Indigenous territory (see Figure 1). Specifically, we found 1,103 areas that served as significant carbon sinks during this period, concentrated in the northern and central Amazon. We present additional novel maps showing the most recent snapshot of total aboveground carbon (Figure 3) and aboveground carbon density (Figure 4) in each protected area and Indigenous territory. Finally, we discuss related policy implications, including finance mechanisms such as REDD+ and HIFOR. Importantly, we highlight the need to account for another key finding of this report: intact, mature tropical forests serve as ongoing and measurable carbon sinks. That is, there should be an incentive to protect not only threatened forests (REDD+) but also high-integrity forests that are key for long-term carbon sink functions (HIFOR). But understanding what lies within those trillions of pixels has long been a massive analysis challenge. Planet CEO Will Marshall’s vision for a Queryable Earth proposes that just like Google indexes the internet, we can index and search the physical world with satellite data and AI. Thanks to recent breakthroughs in foundation models and embeddings, flexible semantic search over Planet’s daily global scans is now a reality. As a striking example of broad area scaled search, RAIC Labs (formerly Synthetaic) Labs traced the trajectory of the 2023 Chinese spy balloon across millions of square miles of #PlanetScope imagery, pinpointing its launch site in minutes. Other innovators are pushing the envelope, too. The Clay Foundation’s models enable cross-sensor search for features like aquaculture ponds or confined animal feed operations, while Earth Genome’s Earth Index is enabling scaled, user-friendly applications that drive impact projects such as surfacing mining activity and new airstrips in the #Amazon. At Planet, we’re generating and leveraging our own embeddings for search and change detection, and we’re eager to collaborate across the ecosystem to make scaled, accessible search a new standard. What makes Planet truly unique? Our daily, global scans can power an AI-driven index that’s dynamically updated and inherently time-aware, so we can move beyond static snapshots to explore change and uncover insights as they emerge. What are you searching for? Let’s find it together! #AI #SemanticSearch #QueryableEarth #FoundationModels #SatelliteImagery #EarthObservation #BigData #Planet #RemoteSensing #GeoAI #NeedleInAHaystack #DailyData www.planet.com
