The Trevor Project commends the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) on the recent release of the 2024 National Strategy for Suicide Prevention 🧡 As part of the National Strategy, the federal government has set concrete objectives and identified 200+ actions to prevent suicide through a Federal Action Plan that will mobilize the entire federal government to prevent suicide at every level of society. For the first time ever, the National Strategy recognizes that our country is confronting an ongoing mental health epidemic that has been particularly devastating for LGBTQ+ young people. We are proud that the National Strategy repeatedly highlights our work with HHS on the 988 Lifeline and our research — including our 2023 National Survey and our research on kids’ online safety — as examples of successful initiatives to prevent suicide. We look forward to strengthening our partnership with HHS/SAMHSA, the 988 LGBTQ+ subnetwork, and other crisis centers to ensure that those in crisis receive the support they need 🌈 Pictured here: Saurav Jung Thapa, Senior Federal Affairs Manager, pictured with Dr. Miriam E. Thanks to a generous grant from Annie E. Casey Foundation, The Trevor Project was able to partner with Search Institute to better understand how LGBTQ+ young people positively develop in online spaces, specifically TrevorSpace. With fewer than 40% of LGBTQ+ young people finding their home to be LGBTQ-affirming, TrevorSpace creates an opportunity for youth to find online community and overcome the challenges and barriers that may exist when trying to access in-person support. We received data from more than 600 LGBTQ+ young people to help us advance how social media platforms can better serve queer and trans youth. Check out our blog to see all of the insights and learnings today ⬇️🌈 https://lnkd.in/eqeCjuc8 To register for TrevorSpace: https://lnkd.in/eAX3wD_F 🧡 #TheTrevorProject #TrevorSpace #DataMakesADifference #SocialMedia #Internet #LGBTQ

Breaking news 📢 We are proud to share that Pennsylvania has joined 22 other states and the District of Columbia to comprehensively ban the dangerous and discredited practice of conversion therapy by licensed mental health providers. "Despite every major medical and mental health association in the country denouncing this practice, conversion therapy is, tragically, still very much an ongoing and pervasive practice that traumatizes young people all across the country.” - Troy Stevenson (he/him), Director of State Advocacy Campaigns at The Trevor Project Learn more ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/gmm-zxRv

This Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we are proud to uplift Joseph’s story 🏳️🌈🇭🇰 Growing up, Joseph navigated the expectations of his Cantonese American heritage and queer identity while living in a conservative, religious household in Texas. He describes the challenging balancing act of existing in a home where conversations about sexual orientation and gender identity are complicated by cultural or language barriers. Yet, his heritage has also deepened his understanding of the diverse ways that love is expressed. In many AAPI households, including his own, the simple act of cutting fruit is a heartfelt gesture of care. Although these actions may not be grand or outspoken affirmations, they are deeply meaningful and intentional expressions of love. In honor of AAPI Heritage Month, we want to honor the unique cultural expressions of love and support within the AAPI community —and the many ways that LGBTQ+ young people are valued and uplifted in AAPI households. While Joseph’s story is only one perspective of the AAPI LGBTQ+ community, he reminds us that “our collective story is far from monolithic; it is as diverse and vibrant as the myriad of cultures it encompasses.” Read Joseph’s full story ➡️ trvr.org/ExpressionsOfLove #AAPI #AAPIHeritageMonth #LoveWithoutLimits #Community #TheTrevorProject

May is Mental Health Awareness Month — a critical time to advocate and educate about the lived experiences of LGBTQ+ young people. We are proud to release our 2024 U.S. National Survey on the Mental Health of LGBTQ+ Young People, an important resource for increasing understanding, amplifying humanity, and ending anti-LGBTQ+ stigma. This year, our research shed light on a startling reality — rates of suicide among LGBTQ+ young people are far too high, and they are, exacerbated by bullying, limited access to care and community, and harmful anti-LGBTQ+ policies. 50% of LGBTQ+ young people who wanted mental health care in the last year report not being able to get it, and 90% said that their wellbeing was negatively impacted due to recent politics. With the backdrop of an increasingly hostile national media climate, an impending Presidential election, and debate about queer and trans identity in state legislatures nationwide, we know that it’s a challenging time to exist as an LGBTQ+ young person in America. Yet, the possibility of a better future is tangible and real. By sharing their lived experiences in research like this, LGBTQ+ young people are showing us the way forward. When we create affirming spaces where queer and trans youth can freely be themselves, enact policies that protect them, and celebrate the community that serves them, we build a future that they can exist in. That future is possible — and data drives that difference.
