We are grateful to William Stauffer, LSW, CADC, who led April's Grand Rounds on the topic of "Improving Retention with Recovery Capital and Therapeutic Alliance." Bill Stauffer is the executive director of the Pennsylvania Recovery Organizations - Alliance and is highly involved in advocating for individuals with substance use disorders. He has been in long-term recovery since age 21 and has been actively engaged in public policy in the recovery arena for most of those years. Mr. Stauffer is an adjunct professor of social work at Misericordia University and has over 25 years of clinical and administrative experience in inpatient and outpatient settings. He has provided testimony to the US Senate Special Committee on Aging about substance use disorders among older adults. Recently, Mr. Stauffer was honored to present William White's keynote remarks at the inaugural National Conference on Addiction Recovery Science at the Recovery Research Institute at Harvard University. We were thrilled to have him join us to address recovery capital and therapeutic alliance. Workit Health has been authorized by the American Academy of PAs (AAPA) to award AAPA Category 1 CME credit to PAs and NPs who participate in Grand Rounds. All Workit Health staff are welcome to attend these educational sessions.

Pregnant individuals with opioid use disorder deserve respectful, effective care. As part of their April theme of "addiction and substance use disorders," Psychiatric Times spoke with Workit Health Chief Medical Officer M. Justin Coffey, MD, DFAPA, FANPA, CHCIO about Workit Labs' recent study of outcomes for pregnant members receiving medication for opioid use disorder via telemedicine. We hope that our results encourage other programs and health systems to join us in lowering barriers for evidence-based opioid use disorder treatment during pregnancy. https://lnkd.in/gZ_Q2TJg

As we enter the second quarter of 2024, we urge the Drug Enforcement Administration to release its revised proposed rules around telehealth prescribing of controlled substances in a timely manner. Late last year, in response to immense public appeal, COVID-era prescribing flexibilities were extended through the end of 2024. But permanent proposed rules have not yet been revealed, leaving the future of telehealth care uncertain for people who rely on controlled substances. Workit Health members (and all telehealth patients) deserve the security and confidence of knowing if and when the regulations around their care will change. We joined 216 other organizations, providers, and health systems in a letter to the DEA, calling on them to release the new proposed rules immediately and relieve the uncertainty around the future of telehealth prescribing. #addictionmedicine #telehealth #medicationassistedtreatment https://lnkd.in/gZajzrGt

Four important takeaways from our presentation yesterday as the largest providers of virtual opioid use disorder care: 1. Telehealth for OUD works, period. Each provider shared peer-reviewed research illustrating the effectiveness of their care. 2. Studies from several providers illustrate that urine drug screening at home is effective and accurate. 3. In spite of this, significant barriers to care still remain, including both national and state regulations. 4. Pharmacies still act as a barrier to receiving medication, resulting in solutions like friendly-pharmacy databases and shipping partnerships. Marlene C. It was an honor to present our #research from Workit Health alongside my counterparts from Boulder Care, Bicycle Health, and Ophelia at Rx Summit. Together, we are working to break down #barriers and increase #access to #evidence-based #treatment for #opioidusedisorder. Yet, #opioid #overdose continues to be the leading cause of injury #death in the United States and there is still much work to be done. To quote my friend Amanda Sharp and the ISUDCC workgroup at her SAMHSA/DEA panel session yesterday, "Until we get to a point where treatment #medication is easier to get than #fentanyl and the only reason someone is not on treatment medication is because they don't want to be, we won't make progress." Thank you to my coauthors M. Justin Coffey, MD, DFAPA, FANPA, CHCIO, Cynthia Jimes, Ph.D., Shannon Brigham, and Maxwell Weng, and to NIDA for supporting much of this important research.

Yesterday, at #RxSummit2024, we presented this map, showing the states that are served by some of the country's largest #telehealth #opioidusedisorder treatment groups: Bicycle Health, Boulder Care, Ophelia and Workit Health. You will notice several states, mostly in the south (one of the hardest hit regions from the opioid overdose epidemic), which are uncovered. There are many reasons for this, including antiquated and ill-informed laws/regulations related to telehealth, and inadequate reimbursement for opioid use disorder treatment that makes it unfeasible to provide care in those states. Thank you to my co-presenters - it was an honor! Marlene C. Lira, Arthur Robin Williams MD, and Stephen Martin

We love hearing Robin Ann McIntosh, Chairperson & Co-Founder of Workit Health, share with Teri Patterson about her passion for recovery. Robin's honesty about her own history inspires us. Robin and Teri's conversation highlights options for addiction treatment (including Workit Health), and the need to increase access and decrease stigma for these options. https://lnkd.in/gf4s5cPf #wedorecover #addiction #alcoholusedisorder

“The United States suffers from a maternal health crisis, which is fueled, in part, by the devastating impacts of substance use,” Marlene C. Lira, senior author and Workit Health's director of research, said in a statement. “The compelling outcomes of our telemedicine model speak to the promise of low-barrier, patient-led, and technology-integrated care for this high-risk population.” Behavioral Health Business spotlights Workit Health's recent insights into telehealth treatment of pregnant members with OUD. https://lnkd.in/e-cxfuMB
