About the role

Core Optimize Data Science & Engineering is an interdisciplinary product group that builds:

  • the foundational data infrastructure that powers the analytical experiences

  • product analytics to understand how merchants use analytics to grow their businesses

  • discovery and investigation data products to enable deeper usage of analytics for merchants 

  • ML powered data products that render network effects to merchants

The OptimizeDevelop Data Engineering team plays a critical role within this group, developing the tools, capabilities, data models, and interfaces for Shopify and its partners to access the freshest, cleanest data available.

In this role, you will lead a team of Data Engineers tasked with extending the current capabilities of our data access layer, data models, and data warehouse to enable new analytical experiences for our merchants. Your team will partner with Data Science, Data Foundations, Compute and Streaming teams by maintaining and optimizing backend infrastructure tooling for analytical model and ETL development.

The tooling developed and maintained by this group allows our Data Scientists to operationalize complex, low latency data sets that drive analytical experiences from initial deployment through to production. You will be tasked with:

  • Providing people and technical leadership within your team to support the mission

  • Working closely with a cross-functional team of data scientists, data engineers, and engineering leaders

  • Defining and executing on your team’s deliverables

  • All aspects of performance management, including compensation, performance improvement plans, promotions, and separations

Qualifications

  • A Data Engineering Manager at Shopify would typically have 2+ years of previous experience managing engineering teams, and 5+ years of hands-on data/software engineering experience 

  • Highly technical and familiar with all components of a typical data stack (ranging from data acquisition, storage, modeling and process, to serving); You don’t mind getting into the nitty gritty or jumping into the code 

  • Familiarity with Go, Python and/or Scala, PySpark and/or Flink

  • Proven experience managing data development teams with strong focus on business impact

  • Experience hiring and mentoring high-caliber, data-focused engineers and managers with diverse technical strengths and backgrounds

  • Exceptional communication skills, you can easily translate technical concepts into easy to understand language for our stakeholders and partners, both technical and non-technical

  • Ability to design cross-org performance and improvement metrics and turn that into roadmaps for the teams

  • You have successfully led and grown data development teams in your career

  • You are committed to continuous improvement, technical excellence and results
