About the role

Shopify is now permanently remote and working towards a future that is digital by default. Learn more about what this can mean for you.

At Shopify, we build products that help entrepreneurs around the world start and grow their business. We’re the world’s fastest growing commerce platform with over 1 million merchants in more than 175 different countries, with solutions from point-of-sale and online commerce to financial, shipping logistics and marketing.

Data is a crucial part of Shopify’s mission to make commerce better for everyone. We organize and interpret petabytes of data to provide solutions for our merchants and stakeholders across the organization. From pipelines and schema design to machine learning products and decision support, data science at Shopify is a diverse role with many opportunities to positively impact our success. The Data Science & Engineering team acts as the impact multiplier for Shopify’s product teams, putting over 11 petabytes of data to work to make our merchants more successful.  From delivering merchandising insights, to optimizing shipping and processing rates, to reducing credit card fraud, to ad campaign recommendations - our Data Scientists deliver solutions from pipeline to platform via an array of open source tools

A key element to helping Shopify grow and scale for years to come is to use the unprecedented amount of data available to make smart marketing investments. We are looking for a Data Science Manager to join our Growth Data Science and Revenue Data Science teams and help shape the insights and algorithms that will inform our marketing strategy as we grow globally.  Our Growth Data Science and Revenue Data Science teams model and manage marketing and user behaviour data, analyze performance marketing and organic growth, and derive insights and spend optimizations across channels to balance effectiveness and efficiency, across the entire customer acquisition and retention journey.   These teams work on projects ranging from forecasting and conversion likelihood prediction to potential churn classifiers and multi-touch attribution approaches, all in experimentation-oriented approaches, using techniques across machine learning, statistical modelling, and cloud data warehousing.

We’re looking for someone to manage a team of Data Scientists as we continue to expand our marketing capabilities in our Growth and Revenue teams.  You’ll oversee a team owning various problem spaces across Growth Marketing or Revenue, from metrics management and analysis, integration of 1st and 3rd party data, through to data-driven approaches to spend optimization, organic growth acceleration, and retention management, as a partner with our Growth and Revenue teams.  This work touches every aspect of a merchant’s journey, and has both high impact and high visibility.

Our 2 teams have related but different focuses, and your role might wind up in any of them:

Growth Data Science works across current mainstream marketing and new opportunities to uncover new growth options. This team manages the primary marketing data from our largest channels and internal sources, building predictive models and optimization systems that look for efficient and effective growth via experimentation, attribution, and automation, for both paid and organic experiences from acquisition to activation through to retention.

Revenue Data Science focuses on finding and growing the largest of merchants and the complex partnership ecosystem which supports them, integrating sales management systems with internal data to optimize lead flow, salesforce management, and onboarding of large (and rapidly growing) brands, along with the effective management of the myriad of partnerships supplying capabilities and enhancements to merchants across apps, developer studios, and other SaaS partners.

You will need to have experience with:

  • Technical leadership and management experience (you enjoy doing both).  You can jump into the code to the level that your direct reports admire and respect, but are also interested in developing people and capacity for your team
  • Experience creating data product strategies, shipping data products, iterating after launch, and trying again
  • Extensive experience using Python including a strong grasp of object oriented programming (OOP) fundamentals
  • Strong ability to prioritize and communicate to technical and non-technical audiences alike

It would be great if you have:

  • Previous experience using Spark (either via Scala or Pyspark)
  • Experience with statistical methods like regression, GLMs or experiment design and analysis; Machine Learning or other advanced techniques are also welcome
  • Exposure to Tableau, QlikView, Mode, Matplotlib, D3, or similar data visualization tools
  • Some experience with digital marketing and growth approaches (both paid (SEM, paid social, etc.) as well as organic (SEO, content, etc.)), and/or experience with salesforce management and optimization

Closing date: January 8th, 2021,5pm EST
