About the role

Throughout this journey, the Data Science & Engineering organization has evolved into one of the most influential and impactful entities within Shopify. As one of the inaugural teams, the data science team focussed on our Money product line helped define what was possible when merchant data was used to solve one of the most pressing problems faced by entrepreneurs - access to capital.  Today, it is responsible for lending billions of dollars to merchants every year - all powered by data-driven features.

We are now looking for a Director of Data Science to take the Money Data team to the next stage in their journey. You’re inheriting a large business and a high-performing team on day one, but we expect you to play a foundational role in the next evolution that will allow us to change the global trajectory of commerce.  Simply put, you’ll be shaping the future of banking for entrepreneurs while also powering Shopify’s business itself.

You will be:

  • Leading a team of super-talented data scientists and engineers.

  • Owning a portfolio of billions of dollars of capital to deploy in the service of merchants across the globe.

  • Delivering data and insight that is critical to the strategic decision making process across all levels of the organization.

  • In partnership with product managers, engineers, and designers, building product experiences that empower merchants financially.

This unique role combines global scale in a hyper-growth and fully remote environment. For the right individual this is the challenge and the opportunity of a lifetime.

This role will be working closely with:

Kaz Nejatian, VP Product (Merchant Services)

Brian Crescimanno, Director of Engineering (Merchant Services)

Mike Develin, Head of Data Science (Merchant Services)

Qualifications

You’ll Need To Have:

  • Organizational development – You’ll need a demonstrated track record of scaling and leading a best-in-class, diverse data organization, and building the leaders of the future.

  • A career path that may have included both large process-rich organizations and smaller, fast-moving companies. The ideal candidate will have been successful in both settings and can meld the best of large and lean.

  • Product mindset – You have a product gene that enables you to get to the root of problems faced by customers and users and to create data solutions to solve these challenges.

  • Well-balanced skills – People have trouble pinning you down. Both business and technical teams claim you as their own. You are equal parts technical and functional (and both are exceptionally strong), and you are equally comfortable and effective at presenting to technical or business leaders.

It would be great if you have previous experience with:

  • Building data-driven products and services within the fintech space

  • Applying machine learning algorithms in a large-scale production setting

  • General understanding of data infrastructure, such as Kafka, Spark, BigQuery, Presto, Tensorflow

Closing date: Monday, November 7 at 11:59PM EDT
