About Shopify

Opportunity is not evenly distributed. Shopify puts independence within reach for anyone with a dream to start a business. Since 2006, we’ve grown to over 10,000 employees and generated over $496 billion in sales for millions of merchants in 175 countries.

This is life-defining work that directly impacts people’s lives as much as it transforms your own. This is putting the power of the few in the hands of the many, is a future with more voices rather than fewer, and is creating more choices instead of an elite option.

About you

Moving at our pace brings a lot of change, complexity, and ambiguity—and a little bit of chaos. Shopifolk thrive on that and are comfortable being uncomfortable. That means Shopify is not the right place for everyone.

Before you apply, consider if you can:

  • Care deeply about what you do and about making commerce better for everyone
  • Excel by seeking professional and personal hypergrowth
  • Keep up with an unrelenting pace (the week, not the quarter)
  • Be resilient and resourceful in face of ambiguity and thrive on (rather than endure) change
  • Bring critical thought and opinion
  • Embrace differences and disagreement to get shit done and move forward
  • Work digital-first for your daily work

About the role

Finance’s mission is to help support Shopify’s growth over the long-term and ensure we achieve our objective of making commerce better for everyone. We are trusted advisors and growth partners to the business, always striving to learn, provide insights, solve complex problems and contribute positive impact. Finance also plays an important role at the strategic planning table and helps influence the future direction of Shopify.

We’re looking for Senior Financial Analysts (SFAs) and a Financial Analyst to join our high impact Merchant Services or Platform & Commercial Finance teams. In these roles, you will provide financial planning, analysis, and decision support to one or more areas of Shopify’s business. We’re looking for crafters that want to help improve quality, timeliness and depth of insight, ultimately enabling the organization to make great decisions quickly.

We are seeking talented individuals who, in addition to the above, have a passion for learning and leveraging technologies such as SQL, Python and AI to drive impactful data analysis. We think of Shopify as a crafter-centric company where meetings come second to getting shit done.  If you are an enthusiastic professional who’s looking to drive outcomes, who’s seeking to expand your experience in data analysis while pushing the boundaries of what's possible with cutting-edge tools, we would love to have you on board.

Shopify was built by thriving on change and pivoting quickly, so part of this process entails having that same mindset and keeping an open mind to the growth opportunities within the Finance team.

Please note that this posting will be used to fill roles on the teams at both the Financial Analyst and Senior Financial Analyst levels. Should your application move forward to the next stage, our hiring team will reach out and let you know for which level you are being considered.

Responsibilities:

  • Owning ongoing model development and business casing to evaluate growth initiatives, product launches, and overall business line performance
  • Partnering with data science, business operations, commercial and product teams, and Product Line leadership to analyze business drivers, identify areas of opportunity and risk, drive improvements to our unit economics, and strengthen LTV
  • Preparing monthly P&L and operational metric forecasts
  • Developing actionable management reporting, dashboards, and KPIs, and overseeing monthly variance analysis and operating reviews to track business success
  • Improve business processes by automating repetitive manual tasks, using tools like SQL, Python and AI
  • Fostering closer collaboration with business partners to advance our team's mission to make commerce better for everyone
  • Owning overall strategic business planning, including preparing annual investment plans and rolling long range plans

Qualifications

  • Proven track record of driving significant impact in complex business situations
  • Significant experience in financial modeling and strategic business planning
  • Experience creating investment business cases in a fast-growth business
  • Strong understanding of SQL, with the ability to write complex queries, perform data extraction and manipulation, and maintain data integrity.
  • Familiarity with Python is a plus
  • A growth mindset, a builder’s mentality and a proven history of effective execution
  • The ability to thrive in a fast-moving, ambiguous work environment and to navigate through change
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills, business partnering expertise, and an excellent ability to mentor and teach
  • Track record of strong performance in data science, management consulting, investment banking, accounting, FP&A, or a related field
  • Experience creating investment business cases in a fast-growth business
  • Experience working with a B2B marketing-sales team
  • Experience in tech or other SaaS-based business models

The shape of a Shopify career

Ben joined Shopify as a frontline Support Advisor with no background in programming or computer science. He’s now a Director of Engineering. Spanning 10 jobs on 7 teams in 9 years, Ben’s Shopify career path has twisted and turned as he’s worked relentlessly to pursue a career as an engineer and adapted to the pace of change—all fuelled by personal and professional hypergrowth.

Our mission as a company is to spread entrepreneurship and help individuals become their own bosses and take control over their lives. I truly believe this mission and value in extreme personal growth and development extends to what’s expected as a Shopifolk. Shopify doesn’t like to tell people what to do. Not only is your career in your own hands, a lot of your day-to-day is too, which can be jarring for many people. To thrive here, you need to be someone who’s willing to take big bets on yourself and figure things out on your own.
