Reddit brings hundreds of millions of people together each month through their common interests, inviting them to share, vote, comment, and create across thousands of communities.

We are looking for a Data Scientist, Machine Learning to partner with our Search Relevance and UX teams to drive user and query understanding for Reddit Search. Generating billions of events and terabytes of data a day, we’re in the unique position to revolutionize content discovery on the internet. We are overhauling Reddit’s search and relevancy infrastructure, and we depend on data to make sure that we can trust our decisions and constantly improve the Reddit discovery experience.

As a Data Scientist, Machine Learning focused on Search you will help us expand beyond the front page and better connect users to the specific content they care about. If you are curious, excited about measuring user success, and motivated by having an impact on a platform that creates community and belonging for everybody in the world: we want you in the team! You will partner with other data scientists, engineering teams, PMs, and designers, and your work will help encourage people to find communities and content that they love. In addition to strong modeling skills, we are seeking a candidate with solid business acumen who can apply modeling outcomes to strategic product decisions.

How You’ll Have Impact:

Reddit’s mission is to bring community and belonging to everyone in the world, and you will be pivotal in making that happen. Reddit has over 100,000 communities, and a true sense of community and belonging can only be achieved by ensuring we are able to connect the right people to the right communities within that network. Your work on Reddit Search will directly contribute to those efforts.

What You’ll Learn:

As the first machine learning data scientist on the team, you will be the expert in helping us identify the best strategies for modeling our users and how to connect those models to real product challenges.

You will work side by side with some of the best Data Scientists, Software Engineers, and Machine Learning Engineers in the world, and will have exposure to everything and anything related to our communities at Reddit. You will also have access to one of the coolest data sets in the world that empowers Natural Language Processing (NLP) applications, Information Retrieval (IR) applications, and social network analysis. This is an exciting opportunity to dig into the data behind the “front page of the internet.”

What You’ll Do:

  • Partner cross-functionally with Eng and Product leads to help define and execute Reddit Search’s roadmap and initiatives.
  • Leverage machine learning to help understand and classify user intent with search, and leverage that understanding to improve the Reddit product experience.
  • Be involved in all phases of modeling including ideation, offline modeling, online implementation, experimentation, deploy and post-launch monitoring/measurements.
  • Identify the signals and segments that can be best leveraged to connect users, through Search, to the communities and content that will inspire them to contribute posts or comments.
  • Become a key stakeholder in Search success, improving not only the user experience but how we measure success.
  • Ensure high-quality and trustworthy Search experiment results and ensure that experimental designs lead to action.
  • Collaborate and mentor other data scientists and share modeling frameworks or techniques to elevate the org.

Who You Might Be:

  • 6+ years of experience in Data Science & Analytics or a related field, preferably for a consumer-facing service/app.
  • 2+ years of experience focused on a search or discovery product or feature.
  • Proficiency with relational databases (e.g., SQL).
  • Familiarity with statistical analysis and programming languages (e.g., R / Python).
  • Results-oriented with a strong customer and business focus.
  • Entrepreneurial and self-directed, demonstrated ability to innovate and bias toward action in fast-paced environments.
  • Able to design, interpret, and act on A/B experiments.
  • Capable of communicating complicated models to a non-technical audience.
  • Ability to communicate and discuss complex topics with technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to tackle ambiguous and undefined problems.
