Job Description
This is a full-time role located in San Francisco, CA or Brooklyn, NY. Our offices are currently closed due to COVID-19, and thus you will start/work remotely until it’s safe to return.
Etsy seeks a strong technical leader who can spearhead its applied science and machine learning effort for building out a new Trust & Safety Applied Machine Learning team. This team will be a part of the Applied Machine Learning Group and partner closely with Etsy’s Trust & Safety organization, whose charter is to keep Etsy’s global marketplace safe for our 60 million buyers and 2 million sellers. In this role you’ll work closely with your Trust & Safety product engineering and business partners to define and execute on machine learning-driven solutions for preventing fraud and abuse scenarios at Etsy. These scenarios range widely, from detecting fraudulent transactions and account takeovers (ATO) to identifying high-risk sellers, to mitigating platform liability by removing potentially counterfeit or unsafe products. Your work will be instrumental in transforming the T&S team from a manual moderation operation to an automation and data analysis centric, scaled abuse team.
As a senior applied science leader, you’ll build and manage a team of applied scientists and ML engineers who are experts in the Trust & Safety field. Your team will be responsible for building large-scale, deployable tools and products. We expect you to have solid ML and engineering skills in order to drive the technical vision while staying connected to the details. Ideal candidates have hands-on experience in Trust & Safety and are well-versed in applying techniques from deep learning, anomaly detection, clustering, behavioral graphs, image analysis, etc. We also expect you to have the leadership and communication skills needed to excel in a fast-paced, cross-functional, and impact-driven environment.
What you will do:
Hire and build a new team of applied scientists to work on Trust & Safety ML applications
Lead technical discussions and provide guidance to the team to build ML models that detect various kinds of online fraud and abuse in the Etsy marketplace.
Define the Trust & Safety ML roadmap and supervise its execution. You will play a strategy lead and coordination role for T&S strategic initiatives that are heavily dependent on ML projects.
Cultivate a strong applied science culture, responsible for delivering business results with the high engineering quality and in a timely fashion.
Who you are:
You are an experienced leader who brings both technical acuity and leadership skills to build a high-performing applied science team with strong engineering practices.
You’re capable but stay humble. You’re naturally curious and are always asking questions to better understand the problem at hand.
You’re deeply committed to collaboration and clear communication. You work effectively with leaders in product, science, experimentation and engineering.
You are familiar with trending and state-of-the-art technology in fraud and risk detection and/or machine learning.
