RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Architect, build and manage database infrastructure related to podcast measurement and reporting (using APIs, log files, BigQuery and Python) in order to serve programming, digital, and revenue teams at NPR.
  • Maintain existing toolsets in addition to developing new ways of ingesting, cleaning, optimizing and efficiently storing audience focused data in BigQuery.
  • Develop backend infrastructure to enable the creation of various website, application, newsletter and social media dashboards to serve stakeholders across NPR. Build new dashboards to serve future needs as required.
  • Improve front-end display of analytics data using CSS and R Markdown to develop illuminating data visualizations
  • Design, develop and implement process improvements such as manual task automation, optimizing current data delivery methods and improving overall system stability, performance and scalability.
  • Master the data flowing through NPR’s digital platforms and find opportunities for analyses that inform key decisions in content, revenue, and digital product development.
  • Act as a resource and mentor for various technical and non-technical teams, including but not limited to the current analytics team.
  • Communicate effectively in small groups, during formal presentations, and at business unit events with engaging storytelling. Develop written communications to address varied styles and information needs.
  • Build strong working relationships at all levels with internal stakeholders and build problem-solving partnerships with clients and colleagues.

WORK LOCATION: This is a remote permitted role. This role is based out of our Washington, DC office but the employee may choose to work on a remote basis from a location that NPR approves. 

QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED SKILLS

  • 4+ years of experience in business intelligence and digital/web analytics, including dashboard creation, ideally in media.
  • 4+ years development experience building and maintaining ETL pipelines.
  • 4+ years of experience working with database technologies particularly experience with Google BigQuery.
  • 4+ years of experience working with data development technologies such as Python, Java, PLSQL, etc. 
  • Proven experience with Google Analytics or Adobe Analytics as well as analytics APIs.
  • Proficiency in HTML and CSS.
  • Extensive knowledge of SQL or other database query languages.
  • Experience working with both raw log file datasets and APIs.
  • Ability to decompose a problem and work through a technical approach and attack a problem in a systematic way.
  • Strong analysis and data interpretation skills with a keen sense for data gaps and inconsistencies.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing data visualization independently or with tools.
  • Excellent oral, written and visual communication skills, particularly at explaining complex quantitative information to non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision as well as in a collaborative team environment.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced work environment with numerous stakeholder groups.
  • Strong documentation skills.  

PREFERRED SKILLS

  • Experience with Business Intelligence tools such as Mode or Looker.
  • Experience with software development using the programming language R.
  • Experience working in an Agile software development environment.
  • Experience working with microservice architectures.
  • Experience with CI/CD systems such as Jenkins or Codefresh.
