About Underline

Underline starts with our people.

At Underline, we've rapidly built a culture around ownership, trust, community, and innovation. Underline is dedicated to cultivating a growth environment where people feel valued, work with a purpose of mission, are personally rewarded, and are professionally challenged.

Are you ready to join this team and transform American communities?

Underline was founded in 2019 with a singular mission: to ensure the vibrancy of our nation through building intelligent community infrastructure in a socially equitable manner. We work with American communities to design, finance, and construct open access fiber-optic networks. These networks are critical to secure internet access that’s fast, affordable, and fair. As open access networks, this infrastructure is also the essential foundation for distributed healthcare services, new wireless solutions, and resilient infrastructure including modernized water systems and responsible energy creation. Our first two projects are in Colorado Springs and Fountain, Colorado.

About this Position

We are looking for a full-time Data Engineering & Analytics Manager to lead the growth of our data team and bring technical excellence, thought leadership, and problem solving to support Underline’s mission. You’ll work across our data, business, and engineering teams to scope, build, and operationalize data and analytics products. You’ll  be responsible for developing a deep knowledge of our internal systems and business processes and building platforms, tools, and other solutions to ingest new data sources, create data models, build transformation pipelines, surface dashboards and reports, and otherwise make clean, accurate, and well-formatted datasets and visualizations available to downstream data users. You’ll play a key role in helping the business make better use of data assets and analytics and ultimately leveling up organizational data literacy.

If you’re excited about building new systems in a fast-paced environment and using your data chops to revolutionize our country’s infrastructure, we want you on our team!

Does this sound like you?

  • You have an entrepreneurial spirit— you have no problem getting your hands dirty and have an intense ability to learn quickly and from others
  • You are detail-oriented and able to juggle and execute on multiple tasks and projects in a nebulous and fluid work environment
  • You are able to context switch and communicate at high level with executives and non-technical stakeholders as well as deep dive into technical details with other analysts, scientists, engineers and other collaborators
  • You enjoy working as part of a collaborative team
  • You have excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • You are a true believer in the social, economic, and environmental benefits of bringing intelligent infrastructure to communities across the country

What you'd be doing:

We’ll be up front— we’re at a stage where we need people who can wear multiple hats and hop in wherever needed.  But generally, the responsibilities for this role will be to:

  • Lead Underline’s data analytics, data science, and data engineering functions, including managing team members
  • Work with leadership, senior managers, and other stakeholders to identify data needs and analytics use cases
  • Set data team priorities, roadmap, and requirements, and guide team to successfully execute on scoped projects
  • Lead analytics efforts to quantify current and forecasted company performance for internal and external reporting
  • Maintain and expand capabilities of modern data stack in AWS utilizing S3, Redshift, dbt, Airflow, Fivetran, Metabase, and a suite of internal Streamlit apps
  • Design, build, and maintain scalable and robust data pipelines and data models
  • Create queries, dashboards, reports, and other applications to analyze & visualize data to cross-functional teams
  • Provide ad hoc analytical and process automation support to leadership and stakeholders
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to data team members, promoting professional growth and development
  • Implement and monitor data quality tests to ensure data accuracy and consistency across multiple data sources
  • Collaborate with software, IT, security, and dev ops teams to implement best practices for data governance and cost management
  • Stay current with industry trends and advancements in data analytics and data engineering technologies

Experience we require:

  • Bachelor’s degree in data science, computer science, analytics, mathematics, engineering, economics, or similar; Master’s degree preferred
  • 5-8+ years experience in data analytics or engineering
  • 1+ years leading data teams in management capacity
  • Track record of leading data engineering and analytics projects end to end— from sourcing and transforming data, through analysis and delivering dashboards and data products in production, and iterating based on stakeholder needs and feedback
  • Advanced proficiency in SQL and Python, particularly data-related Python packages
  • Experience working with the modern data stack - ideally Fivetran, Airflow, dbt core, and Redshift, but experience with similar tools is sufficient
  • Understanding of GIS concepts and proficiency in GIS data tools such as PostGIS, geopandas, and QGIS
  • Working knowledge of version control systems, preferably Git
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms such as AWS

Bonus points:

  • Experience leading building data stack at an early stage startup
  • Experience working with stakeholders to drive process improvements via analytics
