About the Role:
Buoy is taking on the multi-faceted challenge of applying Artificial Intelligence to medicine and developing novel interfaces and algorithms to reason about the relationship between humans, symptoms, and illnesses. 

The Data Engineering team is responsible for deploying and maintaining data warehousing environments, managing ETL/ELT pipelines and job orchestration frameworks, and ensuring data quality. The charter of the data engineering and analytics team is to promote a data driven culture throughout the company, and to make high quality data broadly accessible and easy to work with for analysis, data science and machine learning. The data engineering team can expect to work closely with business analysts, data scientists, machine learning engineers, and developers to build upon our data warehouse, ETL pipelines and data models. 

We are looking for an experienced Data Engineering Manager to join a collaborative engineering team dedicated to improving our core infrastructure, establishing a scalable architecture, and helping to build better tooling and automation for the engineering teams across the organization. You will grow and mentor data engineers, while also demonstrating best data engineer practices in a hands-on role.  A strong candidate will have a passion for solving data-related problems, be able to contribute to a variety of different projects and will excel at communicating.

Responsibilities:

    • Provide technical and professional mentorship to Data Engineers, helping to shape their careers at Buoy and beyond
    • Role model Buoy’s core values
    • Hands-on in building cloud-based data warehousing environments, data processing pipelines, and data models that support a variety of product and business needs
    • Support a variety of data processing pipelines, integrate new data sources into our data warehouse, and create jobs to load, transform, and QA vital datasets
    • Work with data scientists, analysts, and developers in the product development process to ensure that newly designed data models meet analytics requirements and follow best practices
    • Share your expertise on scalable data processing with analysts and data scientists to further our goal of being a truly data driven organization

About You:

    • 1-3 years of experience managing an engineering team
    • 5+ years of experience as a data engineer using data warehousing technologies like Snowflake, Amazon Redshift, S3, Athena, EMR, and Hadoop/Hive/Spark
    • 5+ years experience with implementing ETL and job scheduling or orchestration using tools like Airflow
    • 5+ years programming experience, familiarity with Python, AWS, and Git
    • Proficiency with SQL including one or more relational databases like MySQL, MariaDB, Oracle, Postgres, or similar
    • Excellent communication
    • Bonus Points for the following experience:
    • Experience with web-scale data or working with healthcare data in a HIPAA-compliant environment 
    • Experience with Looker for business intelligence, and Snowflake for data warehousing
    • Experience with A/B Testing
    • Experience with machine learning
    • Proficiency with Kubernetes or infrastructure-as-code via Terraform
