We’re looking for a creative, analytical and highly curious Data Journalist to join our team and make a big impact.
As our first Data Journalist, your mission will be to conduct research and develop marketing materials that tell compelling stories to our audience of PR pros and journalists. You should be excited about the opportunity to play a key role in Muck Rack’s research practice, including methodology, analysis and developing data visualizations. You’ll be a great fit for this role if you have a passion for storytelling using data-driven insights.
What you’ll do:
- Conduct surveys of our audience of journalists, podcasters and PR professionals
- Report findings via slide decks, articles, white-papers, etc. to internal and external stakeholders
- Own and improve upon Muck Rack’s research methodologies, including identifying which surveys to conduct, which audiences to survey and refining a process for conducting research
- Analyze and manipulate large datasets from Muck Rack’s PR platform in order to create best practice materials, generate audience interest and provide opportunities for newsjacking
- Collaborate with Product and Tech teams to identify and source data that provides compelling insights to our audience and aligns with marketing goals
- Work with other members of the Content Marketing team to provide guidance on data visualizations for Muck Rack’s blog, website, social media and other channels
How success will be measured in this role:
- The ability to improve upon and refine a process for existing research efforts
- Expand our audience and drive engagement for research reports and other data-driven content
- Help scale content production
If the details below describe you, you could be a great fit for this role:
- 2-4 years of content production experience, including writing and providing guidance on data visualization, specifically within journalism, communications, and/or marketing
- Experience with research and data analysis, with an excitement for experimenting with new techniques and processes
- Proficiency in an analysis language such as R or Python, and familiarity with SQL and Excel/Sheets
- Comfort with Tableau or other data visualization software
- Creative mindset, preferably a background in design or web design
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with an ability to explain complex concept
- Collaborative and enthusiastic about working with our audience as well as internal teams

Salary
In the US, the starting salary for this role is between $79,000 and $95,000+, depending on skills and experience. We take a geo-neutral approach to compensation within the US, meaning that we pay based on job function and level, not location. For all other countries, we have competitive pay bands based on market standards.
