About our organization:

At Democracy Works, we help Americans vote, no matter what!  Our vision is to make voting a simple, seamless experience for all Americans so that no one misses an election, and our team works to help make this happen. This includes TurboVote, the Voting Information Project (VIP), How To Vote, and Ballot Scout. Alongside the CAA foundation, we co-founded the Civic Alliance. Salary Range: $81,000- $93,000 

(Offers will vary based on experience and location-based cost-of-living calculations.)

The impact you’ll make:

The Data Manager will supervise and direct the data team as we acquire, parse, and assess a nation’s worth of election data.

As the Data Manager you’ll:

  • Manage members of the data team, including Data Associates and Data Fellows, providing ongoing training, direction and performance reviews/assessments as necessary.
  • Coordinate recruitment, hiring, onboarding and retention of data team staff
  • Manage collection, processing, quality assurance, and publication of data for all participating VIP states.
  • Build and maintain code base, including parsers, quality assurance checks, and data management scripts
  • Lead efforts to automate and streamline data processes for election administration programs
  • Create and execute strategy for expanding the breadth and quality of data provided by states and counties.
  • Work with state and local election offices to develop data standards and data exports
  • Collaborate with the Democracy Works developer team on improvements to data management and processing infrastructure
  • Collaborate with Google engineers on data standards and data publication
  • Oversee other data projects and execute on other tasks as may be assigned

You are:

  • Excited about supervising a team, including providing constructive feedback and coaching through corrective action as necessary.
  • Creative, in a way that recognizes solutions to problems inherent with working with large amounts of information

  • Comfortable translating between jargon and vernacular

  • Passionate about civic tech and open data

You have experience:

  • Handling large, complex datasets using a scripting language like SQL, Ruby, Python or R (ideally Python)
  • 2- 4 years of managing, coaching, or mentoring
  • On highly collaborative teams
  • Providing customer support, or working with external partners
  • In politics, government, or non-profits

How we work

Because elections take place everywhere, our employees work from practically every state in the union. We embrace working remotely as the default. Our positions require regular, daily use of a computer (including the use of G-Suite and Slack) to conduct work and communicate with colleagues. We also have regular operating hours (10 am to 6 pm Eastern, Monday to Friday).

For those who prefer to work from an office, we are headquartered in Brooklyn, NY, and we provide support for co-working spaces around the country. We are happy to share more details about the office, including accessibility information, as on-site visits are planned.
