The Role

Do you have a passion for applying analytical reasoning to real-world problems? Do you have a strong mathematical background and understand statistics fundamentals? Are you fascinated by cybersecurity and want to prevent highly sophisticated attacks? If so, Proofpoint is looking for a bright and enthusiastic Data Science intern like you to join the Security Analytics, Intelligence & Learning (SAIL) team.  The SAIL applied research team is responsible for converting data into business value through machine learning detection systems and data-driven decision making. We are a team of Data Scientists and Software Engineers who love keeping up with the latest ML research, creating a creative and supportive workplace environment, and hosting the occasional board game/trivia event. We work closely with product, engineering, and threat research teams to significantly differentiate our product offerings and delight our customers.   

As a Data Science Intern on the SAIL team, you will advance business goals with forward looking research. You will work closely with Data Scientists to implement individual projects and learn the day-to-day responsibilities of professional Data Scientists.  You will own a summer long deliverable and drive progress with support from your mentor and other SAIL team members. Past projects have included implementing clustering systems, improving metrics calculation systems, and enhancing core detection logic.   

Job Requirements

  • Proficiency with Python 3   
  • Proficiency with at least one SQL dialect and CRUD operations  
  • Basic understanding of machine learning methodology and workflow   
  • Basic understanding of machine learning algorithms   
  • Strong problem solving skills    
  • Experience with statistical tests  
  • Experience with classification problems  
    o A desire to learn new skills  

Candidate Profile

You have the ability and interest in working full time (a maximum of 40 hours/week) in our Sunnyvale office or remotely. You are currently pursuing an undergraduate degree and are successfully maintaining an above average GPA. This summer internship is scheduled to run for 11 weeks from June - August 2023..
