Data Scientist (Remote)
The Senior Data Scientist oversees the conceptual vision of data science initiatives, covering the range of data science applications at U-Haul, and guides the team in the execution of that vision.
Responsibilities
- Manage interactions, expectations, and connections with existing business units
- Translates importance and outcomes of data science initiatives to higher levels
- Establish realistic team objectives, KPIs, and timelines for data science projects
- Prioritize work based on expected value to make continued progress on initiatives
- Collaborate with and provide mentorship to other data scientists and data science analysts
- Design and implement data products (pipelines, visualizations, AI/ML models) that add value to U-Haul's business
- Interact with developers, business teams, and other stakeholders to determine requirements
- Conduct effective exploratory analysis (EDA)
- Identify the best model for a given problem
- Work alongside data engineering to source and transform data
- Build ETL pipelines independently
- Build, tune, and deploy machine learning/AI models
- Communicate results to business leaders and technical audiences
- Maintain team documentation, organization, and resources to ensure stability and scalability of the team

Requirements
- Master’s degree or Ph.D. from an accredited college/university in an applicable field, with a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience
- History of increasing responsibility and/or a leadership role in data science
- Exposure to and familiarity with a variety of statistical and machine learning techniques including but not limited to Regression and Classification, Graph Data Science/Network Analysis, Computer Vision, Time Series Analysis and Forecasting, Geospatial Data/GIS, Recommender Engines
- Proven track record (academic or business) in one or more data science fields above preferred
- Demonstrated experience processing and analyzing structured and unstructured data
- Strong coding skills in SQL and Python
- Experience with graph databases (Neo4j) is highly desired
- Experience with model deployment/MLOps is helpful
- Experience in Databricks, AzureML, Kubernetes are pluses
Skills
- Good communicator, both written and oral
- Comfortable with full stack data science: taking a project from idea to execution
- Deep understanding of statistics and experimental design
- Must be effective at coding in SQL and Python
- Effective communication and presentation skills, written and oral
- Familiarity with DevOps/Agile Scrum a plus
