We are looking for passionate, collaborative, and entrepreneurial individuals to join the team. If you like fast-paced environments and want to help us build the future of forestry, then we’d love to speak to you!

Job Description
SilviaTerra is built on terabytes of geospatial data, and we are rapidly expanding to integrate new types and structure of data into our work. Our Basemap dataset is our flagship data product- a high-resolution dataset of estimated number, species and size of trees across the continental United States.  The Data Science team at SilviaTerra is responsible for developing, improving, and extending this dataset to new geographies. We are also focused on developing and improving metrics (biodiversity indices, harvest likelihood, etc.) based on these data. Basemap and its derivative metrics are critical components that underpin transactions on our carbon market.

This role is an integral part of that work, working closely with the rest of our team of forest biometricians and data scientists on model development and integrating new sources and types of measurements. Our ideal candidate has experience with ecological applications of remote sensing data, in multiple regions and at a range of scales. Your expertise will be a critical part of our rapid expansion of the Basemap dataset around the world. We want to hear from you!

This is a remote position.

Key Responsibilities

    • Research capabilities and benchmark the performance and contributions of a range of remote sensing data products within SilviaTerra’s current pipeline
    • Work closely with the rest of the Data Science team to test and deploy new remote sensing data inputs into our modeling and prediction processes, toolchains, and workflows
    • Develop methods and workflows for efficiently combining high-resolution imagery and field measurements for forest change detection and modeling
    • Provide statistical guidance on sample design and data integration to support modeling and prediction

Required Skills & Experience

    • Experience with processing and analyzing data from a range of airborne and spaceborne sensors and platforms
    • Experience developing novel approaches for modelling and predicting vegetation information using remote sensing datasets
    • Familiarity with natural resource management and ecology
    • Fluent ability in Python or R (preferably both)

Desired Skills & Experience

    • Familiarity with forest inventory, management, and ecology data
    • Experience with geospatial and remote sensing analyses using open-source software (QGIS, R and Python packages)
    • Detail-oriented
    • Excellent written communication skills
    • Comfortable working remotely with necessary travel for company meetings
