Stanford Securities Litigation Analytics is a research center within Stanford Law School focusing on public company shareholder litigation and corporate governance matters. SSLA closely collaborates with legal practitioners and risk managers to pursue research questions with practical applications. SSLA seeks a Data Scientist to contribute to SSLA’s research and experimentation on applications of artificial intelligence, natural language processing and machine learning by performing analysis and data extraction from legal texts, developing and refining frequency and severity models for litigation, and developing pipelines to integrate AI & machine learning into the larger project workflow. In addition, the Data Scientist will support the work of the existing research team by managing existing case data, assisting with quality assurance, and creating data visualizations to help our researchers communicate their findings and ideas.

The Data Scientist will report to the Senior Data Scientist, within the SSLA org structure and with a dotted-line reporting relationship with Stanford Law School’s IT department to ensure compliance with SLS policies related to AI tools and collaboration across departments through quarterly meetings.

DUTIES:

  • Select and clean datasets of legal texts and financial information from sources including WRDS, SPAC Insider, and NASDAQ using statistical packages such as Stata and R.
  • Adjust and fine-tune machine learning algorithms to ensure accurate model outputs.
  • Under supervision of Senior Data Scientist, develop and apply algorithms using python and relevant packages to process legal texts; provide preliminary reports related to accuracy and precision of extracted data for Senior Data Scientist review.
  • Implement code revisions or text collection techniques to increase data quality.
  • Assist with preparation of query-specific reports as requested by research team, including quality assurance reports.
  • Utilize tools including Excel and HighCharts to draft data visualizations for SSLA website, blog posts, and other publications.
  • Under supervision of Senior Data Scientist, maintain documentation of AI & machine learning pipline and testing results, upload code to GitHub repository, and suggest potential pipeline improvements.
  • Advise SSLA staff on independent research projects and assist with preparation of project-specific summary statistics.
  • Assist research team with documentation of data collection protocols and quality assurance checks; support Senior Data Scientist in preparation of periodic updates regarding AI & machine learning tools to team leadership.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree or combination of education and relevant experience
  • Experience in a quantitative discipline such as economics, finance, statistics, or engineering
  • Prior experience with AI & machine learning preferred
  • Prior experience with complex litigation and legal texts preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Substantial experience with MS Office and analytical programs.
  • Strong writing and analytical skills.
  • Ability to prioritize workload.

*The expected pay range for this position is $66,560 to $97,000 per annum in the Stanford Work Location

*The expected pay range for this position is $53,000 to $79,000 per annum in a Remote Work Location
