About Zipline

Do you want to change the world? Zipline is on a mission to transform the way goods move. Our aim is to solve the world’s most urgent and complex access challenges by building, manufacturing and operating the first instant delivery and logistics system that serves all humans equally, wherever they are. From powering Rwanda’s national blood delivery network and Ghana’s COVID-19 vaccine distribution, to providing on-demand home delivery for Walmart, to enabling healthcare providers to bring care directly to U.S. homes, we are transforming the way things move for businesses, governments and consumers. The technology is complex but the idea is simple: a teleportation service that delivers what you need, when you need it. Through our technology that includes robotics and autonomy, we are decarbonizing delivery, decreasing road congestion, and reducing fossil fuel consumption and air pollution, while providing equitable access to billions of people and building a more resilient global supply chain.

Join Zipline and help us to make good on our promise to build an equitable and more resilient global supply chain for billions of people.

About You and The Role

Zipline is hiring a data scientist to support analysis of the vast amounts of data produced by our autonomous aircraft and various IoT devices. In this role, you’ll analyze data produced by these hardware devices, produce compelling visualizations, and enable others to do the same. The ideal candidate will be excited about developing high-quality code and user-friendly tools that help team members derive insights from our data. Your work will enable the entire organization to make more informed decisions, innovate faster, and serve our customers better.

What You'll Do

  • Carry out analysis on data produced by our hardware systems and create insightful visualizations to share your findings.
  • Create reusable reference notebooks and material that will be leveraged by several teams to carry out high-value analyses.
  • Drive essential improvements towards the user-friendliness and efficiency of our Python libraries for interfacing with hardware data.
  • Serve as an internal consultant on our data metrics definitions and actively steer efforts to raise code quality.
  • Partner with our data engineers to identify opportunities to simplify and speed up data analysis by making upgrades to our data pipelines and data formats.
  • Partner with upstream engineering teams to refine data logging patterns and resolve data quality issues.
  • Document and evangelize the value of our data tools to engineers and other cross-functional partners.
  • Spend time with your customers and use their feedback to create a roadmap that you’ll execute against.

What You'll Bring

  • Advanced proficiency with Python and libraries commonly used for data analysis, e.g., Pandas, Numpy, Scipy, and Matplotlib.
  • Adept at summarizing large datasets visually that make complex results understandable at a glance.
  • Strong understanding of descriptive statistics, probability, and statistical modeling.
  • Experience working with continuous integration and continuous deployment processes and tools.
  • Skilled at translating a general question or problem into clearly defined analysis and presenting actionable insights.
  • Adept at ruthlessly prioritizing critical analysis requests and balancing multiple high-value projects, deadlines, and stakeholders at once.
  • A desire to continuously improve your work and the work of others.
  • Experience listening to customers, identifying opportunities, and creating roadmaps and detailed project plans.
  • Enthusiasm to work closely with engineering teams and develop domain knowledge about hardware and software across the company.
  • Passion and excitement to serve as a technical mentor and thought leader.
  • Nice to haves:
    • Experience with Databricks or PySpark
    • Experience building interactive visualization suites

What Else You Need to Know

Location: This is a remote friendly role, but you do have the option to come into our South San Francisco office if you’re based in the Bay Area. If you are full-time remote, you must be able to travel to our headquarters in South San Francisco to work with stakeholders periodically (1-2 times per quarter, at most) and overlap working hours with both GMT and PST time zones.
