About Ophelia

Ophelia is a mission-driven organization that helps individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD) improve their health and quality of life. We make evidence-based treatment private, accessible, and affordable.

Opioid overdose is the #1 cause of death for Americans under 50, accounting for over 100 deaths each day. There is a proven treatment for OUD, called medication-assisted treatment (MAT), but 80% of people in need are unable to access it. We created Ophelia to make this treatment accessible from the privacy of your home.

We're a diverse and dedicated team - clinicians, scientists, techies, and humanitarians - on a mission to reimagine addiction treatment in America. We've raised $68 million from the world's top healthcare and technology investors (Y Combinator, Tiger Global, Menlo Ventures, General Catalyst), and we're rapidly expanding across the nation, helping thousands of people each day.

Join us, save lives, and help fix healthcare for those who need it most.

About the Role
As Director of Data, you’ll be responsible for defining and leading implementation of Ophelia’s data strategy! That includes building a healthy, centralized data team, collaborating across departments to hear needs and prioritize work, ensuring a scalable data infrastructure and development process, and delivering stellar data work in an iterative model.

“Data” today centers around business operations analytics which requires a sound data engineering base. Over time, this team will likely expand to include key focus areas around clinical analytics, clinical research, and data science capabilities, amongst other capabilities. Today the team is one full-time person plus managing a wonderful third-party firm that provides great expertise and a second full-time equivalent.

Our data systems today are nascent but burgeoning. We’re based in Google Cloud Platform (GCP), using dbt, Airflow, Snowflake, and getting ready to roll out Looker. Data is already ingrained in our corporate culture: you’ll witness our team already speaking with data and many leaders querying data directly. But there’s a lot of room for improvement!

In this fully remote role, you will report to our Chief Technology Officer and be a peer to our Directors of Product, Product Design, and Engineering. You will work with the leadership of all teams at the company to push forward Ophelia’s use of data to foster a culture of data-driven decision-making to provide better patient care. You will be accountable for governing all analytics data and ensuring high quality availability of that data through the supporting systems. You will own those systems, which will include data engineering infrastructure, data warehouse and data marts, business intelligence systems, and certain broadly-used reports such as Ophelia’s primary business KPI dashboard. Because the team is small today, you will likely need to be quite hands-on in the early days and evolve towards more focused management in the future.

Together, we’ll help hard-to-reach people treat their opioid dependence. You may not have experience in this treatment area, but ideally you’ll have knowledge of the healthcare space, including understanding health outcomes and benchmarks, systems, and regulatory compliance (HIPAA).

Responsibilities

    • Design, implement, and maintain a modern data stack that is reliable, accessible, and compliant
    • Attract, hire, retain, and develop a team of wonderful data analysts and data scientists that scales with our business’ needs
    • Work across the business to solicit great data projects, prioritize the work, and communicate around the work. Ensure timely and reliable delivery of those projects
    • Improve access to data insights for everyone at Ophelia by making access faster, easier, and more well understood
    • Help create a strong data-driven culture around decision making across the company through training and mentorship and improve measurement strategies
    • Participate in Tech Leadership planning and other activities

Skills & Competencies

    • 7+ years experience in data analytics and data management; with solid exposure to data engineering
    • 3+ years experience either managing a team of at least three analysts OR strong experience as a team leader with delivery accountability and indirect reporting (eg. “tech lead”)
    • Stellar communications with passion for storytelling with data and able to create strong points of view to help our strategy and at applying statistical methods to business data
    • Expert at analytical use of SQL and Python and analyzing data using common tools like Google Sheets or Microsoft Excel
    • Strong experience with data modeling and relevant data engineering tools including Snowflake, dbt, and Airflow, or similar and with relevant business intelligence tools including Looker
    • Subject matter expert in measurement related to at least two of the following disciplines: finance, digital products, marketing, business operations, or healthcare
    • Passionate about our mission to make evidence-based addiction treatment universally accessible
