Engineering Manager, Analytics

We’re looking for an Engineering Manager to support our Analytics team. This person will work closely with engineers, product managers, and designers to create sophisticated, insightful, and reliable customer-facing analytics. Wistia’s analytics features empower our customers to understand the performance of their Wistia-hosted content and how to get the most value out of their content marketing efforts.

The Analytics team at Wistia is building the data stack to enable the next generation of Wistia content analytics. This team, formed in early 2020, has big goals for the future with opportunity for huge business impact and lots of implementation autonomy to determine how we get there. We have a legacy analytics stack on life support, and we are rapidly building out new tools capable of obsoleting the legacy and enabling many new analytics product features. We are excited about our new stack, which uses Kafka and Flink for stream processing and Druid for storage and querying, but many challenges remain. In 2021, we will be adding new data sources, building new in-app UI components, fixing performance issues as we scale up, building tools to reprocess bad time segments from archives, and porting features from the legacy stack to the new. The Analytics team has 3 engineers today, and will likely grow to 5–6 by the end of 2021.

This team will remain fully distributed post COVID-19, with synchronized quarterly visits to our Cambridge, MA office.

This role will be primarily a people manager role, while also staying close to project details and occasionally contributing directly. You will be a great fit for this role if you have experience as a data engineer (or another flavor of backend engineer) yourself, have managed engineers before, and are eager to support a team that will be critically important to Wistia’s future product roadmap.

You will be directly responsible for

  • Managing, supporting, and growing the Analytics team.
  • Delivering the next generation of Wistia’s customer-facing content analytics, including the data platform to power it.
  • Becoming familiar with today’s data engineering landscape and learning our own stack, in order to review code, guide architecture decisions, and occasionally contribute yourself.
  • Working closely with team members and product leadership to establish the long term vision, create an executable roadmap, and removing barriers to success.
  • Integrating product, design, and engineering goals to strike the right balance between new product features and long term system health.
  • Representing Analytics team needs within the Engineering management team.
  • Protecting a humane, sustainable, and inclusive work environment within the team.

You will fit in great on our engineering leadership team if you:

  • Enjoy enabling customers and learning quickly from feedback, even when it means making decisions amid uncertainty.
  • Appreciate the constraints of running a profitable business, paired with the benefits of a healthy work-life balance.
  • Care deeply about fostering an environment where people of all backgrounds and experiences can flourish.
  • Are sufficiently hands on and aware to fully understand and represent your team’s needs, strengths, and weaknesses.
  • Thrive in a culture that demands openness and transparency, but also rewards it and bends over backward to make it safe and comfortable.
  • Are driven and goal-oriented, but not obsessed with quantifying all of your achievements.
  • Think in tradeoffs, and work to understand the downsides of decisions you make before you make them.

We’re looking for a history of:

  • Excellence in managing, building, and hiring teams.
  • High product output relative to the size of the teams of which you’ve been a part.
  • Enabling your team and staying off the critical path, with the awareness and ability to dive into the code when called for.
  • Building consensus among stakeholders, and resolving disagreements without sacrificing trust.
  • Understanding and empathy for the needs of engineers, the needs of customers, and the needs of the business. You are not an advocate for one of these; you are an advocate for all of them and must exercise judgment accordingly.
  • Improving your team’s diversity and inclusivity, independent of whether you have formally been in a position to make hiring decisions.

About Wistia

We care a lot, so our benefits are actually benefits, not just the fun stuff like swag and snacks in the office (though we also have lots of those too!).

We know the biggest investment we can make is in our employees, so we provide:

  • A great compensation package
  • 401k with 3% company contribution, regardless of whether you contribute
  • Profit Sharing!
  • Flexible hours
  • Fully paid healthcare coverage for you and your family (including dental) and a healthcare FSA
  • Up to 16 weeks paid family leave
  • Flexible vacation and sick leave
  • Transportation subsidies

Location/Remote Opportunities
