Job Title: Engineering Manager - Machine Learning & Search Infrastructure

Slack is looking for an Engineering Manager to join our Machine Learning & Search Infrastructure group. You’ll be leading a team of dedicated engineers responsible for delivering on key parts of our search, artificial intelligence, and machine learning platform. A sucessful candidate will be an experienced engineer leader with experience in leading effective engineering teams and who is knowledgeable around the particular needs of ML infrastructure, search, and/or other sorts of ML/AI products.

ML & Search Infrastructure, part of Slacks’ Core Infrastructure organization, is in the business of providing the tools, infrastructure, and the expertise, to make this product vision possible. Our group consists of three teams:

• Machine Learning Infrastructure, which owns services for ML & AI model training and inference

• Search Infrastructure, which maintains our distributed search index cluster

• Machine Learning Modeling, which develops and deploys ML & AI models to use in our product

We’re looking for a manager who can lead either the Search Infrastructure team or Machine Learning Infrastructure team. For that team, you’ll be helping build the technical vision and strategy for the team. You’ll be responsible for driving a technical vision and strategy that ensures these services are reliable, efficient, scalable, and ultimately powerful to build great products for our customers. You’ll be instrumental in developing and building out that team, guiding the engineering approach as well as communicating strategy and results to the broader organization. You’ll partner with other leaders in product and engineering to build great features for our customers.

Here are things that we consider critical to being an Engineering Manager on our team:

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or related field, or equivalent training, fellowship, or work experience.

• 7+ years experience in software engineering and 1+ year of engineering management experience.

• Prior hands-on experience in the realm of machine learning, search, infrastructure engineering and/or other related related areas

• Passion for establishing data driven culture, building high-performing teams, and growing business impact.

• You are able to weigh several and often conflicting constraints to make rapid decisions in a dynamic and quickly-growing company. You are pragmatic, organized, and biased toward shipping.

• You are a very strong verbal and nonverbal communicator. You’re excited to explain complex technical concepts and share your knowledge with diverse audiences both internally and externally.

• You excel at building roadmaps and can develop a long-term team vision in partnership with other engineering teams at Slack. You can then be accountable for driving project execution.

• You love helping engineers develop new skills and advance in their careers. You don’t shy away from performance conversations and you recognize the relationship between objective feedback and career growth.

For Colorado-based roles, the base salary hiring range for this position is $133,400 to $254,700.

Compensation offered will be determined by factors such as location, level, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Certain roles may be eligible for incentive compensation, equity, benefits.
