Job Title: Machine Learning Engineer

Location: Remote position with travel to our Vernon Hills office no more than once quarterly post COVID-19.

As a Wonderlic ML engineer, you’ll partner with stakeholders to internalize the problem domain, uncovering opportunities where machine learning solutions are appropriate. Your passion for data, creative problem-solving, and ownership will empower you to deliver these data products end-to-end, from research to deployment. Through technical excellence, you will play a significant part in enhancing our processes and improving our toolkits.

Essential Functions & Competencies needed:

  • Presents complex concepts in a clear narrative that influences stakeholders to take action
  • Understands core ML concepts with the ability to build an end-to-end ML pipeline
  • Validates hypotheses, reveals data inconsistencies, and uncovers hidden insights through exploratory data analysis
  • Devotes time to learning new and relevant tools, processes, and technologies
  • Deeply explores the business domain of a project, including how it may present limitations on a model’s design
  • Conducts common performance/generalization analyses of regression and classification models
  • Demonstrates mastery of core computer science concepts, including common algorithms and data structures
  • Demonstrates proficiency in Python, including Pandas, NumPy, at least one data visualization library (e.g. Matplotlib, Seaborn), and at least one ML library (e.g. scikit-learn, TensorFlow)
  • Consistently delivers well-styled, well-tested, and maintainable code
  • Embodies technical and leadership skills needed to conduct regular code and design reviews with peers
  • Anticipates the challenges associated with ML models in production and design efficient, elegant solutions to these (e.g. retraining strategies, monitoring alerts)
  • Cultivates innovation by proactively proposing new ideas to solve projects more effectively
  • Partners with manager and PM to discuss implementation and prioritization
  • Responds promptly to opportunities and challenges with a constructive/positive mindset and a sense of urgency

Supervisory Responsibilities: No direct reports

Reports to: Manager of AI Innovation

Required Education and Experience:

  • BA/BS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Math, Statistics, Economics, or equivalent related STEM field or equivalent experience
  • [Preferred] 1+ years of experience building production-ready ML systems that resulted in measurable business impact
  • Experienced software developer, with proficiency in data processing
  • Solid knowledge of both the theory and application of ML algorithms
  • Hands-on experience with Python and several of its popular data science libraries (e.g. Pandas, NumPy, Matplotlib)
  • Experience using professional software engineering best practices for the full development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, version control management, and testing
  • Experience with SQL and Excel
  • Experience with R and/or Tableau a plus
