Position Focus:

Yale is seeking a dynamic, seasoned Principal Data Architect to serve on the Health Sciences Information Services (HSIS) team. Reporting to the Director of Health Software and Analytics Solutions, and in partnership with Yale University data stewards and Yale ITS, the candidate will develop Enterprise Information Management and Data Integration Strategies for an analytics platform that will support the Yale Health Sciences.  This is a hands-on technical position which will require both breadth and depth in Data Architecture, Data Warehousing and Business Intelligence as well as delivering integrated data solutions that enable data driven decision making. May lead and direct the work of others.

Principal Responsibilities:
HSIS at Yale supports the School of Medicine, School of Public Health, School of Nursing, and Yale Health. This position will create a unified Data Architecture and Data Warehouse across Health Sciences to support those units with a focus on 5 key business dimensions: Finance and Administration, Education, Clinical, Research and Faculty Affairs.

As Principal Data Architect, the candidate will be responsible for the design, modeling, and implementation of this EDW and all associated data dictionaries, business rules and logic. This position will leverage and partner with developers, analysts, and departmental unit technology resources to create a holistic approach to Master Data Management. This includes developing and implementing plans to develop a trusted, authoritative data store from multiple sources (administrative, faculty, student, research administration) to better inform school-wide decision making, enabled by dashboards, analytics, and reporting solutions. Additionally, the position will work closely with data stewards across the business and technical team of stakeholders to identify data requirements, develop data integration strategies, and ensure the successful implementation of those strategies. The position will be expected to design effective role-based authorization standards and practices to ensure Yale’s data is secure and accessible to authorized parties throughout its lifecycle; interface with IT technologists to define, implement and support the Data Infrastructure and Analytics for Yale Health Sciences.

As Principal Data Architect, the candidate will provide end-to-end vision of data solutions and data models. Define and lead the data architecture including the development of a data roadmap and data strategy. Meet with key stakeholders and department leads to get a comprehensive understanding of their data needs. Design and implement data models, data warehouses, data lakes, and data integration processes to support the organization's data needs. Actively participate in / Lead data model design sessions and, where applicable, apply industry best practices. The candidate will help coordinate/design integrated data solutions across the Yale Health Sciences to support the tripartite mission of Education, Patient Care and Research. Produce data models and solution design documents including data dictionaries in alignment with business objectives. Evaluate the relative maturity of existing systems and identify areas where standards are immature or lacking in comprehension. Prioritize remediation of technical gaps across the enterprise Drive the technology components of long-range planning across the institution. Advise Senior Leadership on technical risks, debt, and gaps. Establishes and maintains the suite of technologies that are in current use as well as their relative maturity and degree of expected future investment. Identifies areas of technical debt and develops remediation plans. Responsible for broad technology and policy decisions as well as the ability to articulate the likely impact on the long-term overall effectiveness of ITS.

Essential Duties

1. Conducts research and evaluation of technology options for the development and deployment of applications by working closely with ITS staff to provide production support and enhancements for several applications. 2. Plans, designs, and implements strategic development initiatives so that data assets of the organization are supported by a data architecture in line with the organization strategic goals and initiatives. 3. Interfaces with other teams within ITS and with major users in order to ensure a high level of integration and effectiveness among all application software within the organization and to design systems that meet the stated objectives. Prioritizes and solves application software problems. 4. Ensures the preparation of formal system specification documents, including business process diagram, data flows, and technical documentation. 5. Works as part of ITS teams in the selection of application and infrastructure software. 6. Sets up a metadata registry and allows domain-specific stakeholders to maintain their own data elements as required. 7. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in a related field and six years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Demonstrated ability in developing unified data models for an enterprise data warehouse.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Expertise in Master Data Management (MDM), Business Intelligence (BI) and analytics and modern data management including data warehousing and data lakes, data profiling and data quality.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Highly proficient in IT system integration, data integration, and Extract, Transform, and Load (ETL) tools like Talend or SSIS

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Hands-on demonstrated ability with various data sources ranging from warehouses to structured and unstructured data.

Required Skill/Ability 5:

Highly proficient in SQL Server and T-SQL

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Masters in computer science, Data Science or equivalent. Project management experience. Experience with Power BI preferred. Higher education experience preferred but not required.
