How you’ll make a difference:

The Data Engineering team at Custom Ink works to build data solutions and implement tools to help improve data accuracy and reliability so our business can make data driven decisions with confidence. As a Senior Data Engineer, you’ll play a key role in the success and growth of the Data Engineering team by mentoring and playing a leadership role within the team. By recognizing the importance of data democratization and leveraging your technical abilities, you’ll provide technical leadership in design, development and deployment of the frameworks that support our data ecosystem. You’ll report to the Data Engineering Manager.

What you’ll do:

As a Senior Data Engineer you’ll play an active role in the decision-making process related to selection of all software architecture solutions. You’ll focus on partnering on strategy to improve the design and implementation of our data warehouse, ensuring reliable data infrastructure and creating data solutions for business partners. This represents a tremendous opportunity to:

  • Drive innovation within Data Engineering by playing a lead role in technology decisions for the future of our data science, analysis, and reporting needs

  • Work with business partners and software engineers to gather, understand, and bridge definitions and requirements

  • Lead the design and development for highly complex and critical data projects with strict timelines

  • Drive efficiency gains through improved reliability and stakeholder adoption of self-serve tools

  • Leverage research and previous experience to ensure we’re up to date and continuously exploring 

  • Identify gaps and weaknesses in our data stack and continues to drive learning advancements for the team (ie. book club, coursework, etc.)

  • Provide technical expertise and leadership to Data Engineering team in all phases of work including analysis, design, and development of architecture

How you’ll be measured:

At Custom Ink, we love data and metrics! More than that, we love measuring the impact of our work on the experience and satisfaction of our teams and customers. As a champion for ensuring quick and easy access to accurate data, measures for this role will include:

  • Improvements to team efficiency and effectiveness through implementation of data tools (self-service, data quality, etc.)

  • Improvements to performance and reliability of data infrastructure

  • Meet project deadlines and requirements

  • Ensure end users/business partners have trust in the data and actively promote stakeholder adoption of self-service tools

  • Establish strong working relationships with Project Managers, Software Engineers, and other key stakeholders

What we’re looking for:

This role involves collaborating effectively with various tech teams and business partners and allows opportunity for real ownership over data improvements and new processes that will contribute to big picture success across teams. The ideal candidate will be curious, analytical and a strong problem solver with exceptional software engineering skills, advanced knowledge of databases and other analytical tools and who understands the importance of developing best practices and reliable documentation.

Accordingly, the ideal candidate will be strong in the following areas:

  • Minimum of 4+ years data engineering experience with a proven track record for success in a fast paced environment

  • Ability to think abstractly and recognize when a generic solution can solve many problems rather than just one

  • Experience with most levels of the data stack (ingestion layer, modeling layer, analytics, etc.)

  • Exceptional software engineering skills ()

  • Experience working with both batch and stream data processing

  • Ability to write, analyze and debug SQL queries that range in difficulty from simple to complexfrom simple to complex

  • Experience working with API’s to collect and ingest data

  • Exposure to modern data modeling

  • Able to negotiate and influence changes outside of the team that continuously shape and drive the Data vision of the company

  • Familiarity with AWS cloud solutions

  • Familiarity with BI tools (Tableau, Looker, etc.)

  • Collaborative leader that can assume a high level of ownership for the teams work

  • Ability to coach and mentor team members and support team growth and development

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Exceptional problem solving and analytical skills

  • Machine learning or Predictive Modeling experience is a plus

Our data stack: Apache Airflow, dbt, Redshift, Tableau, Python, AWS cloud ecosystem
