About Change Research

Change Research innovates to solve critically important problems at the intersection of data, social science, and politics. Since 2017, Change Research has been at the forefront of measuring public opinion. Candidates, causes, cities, and companies use our data to understand people’s needs, improve messaging, and accomplish their strategic goals.  As a Senior Data Scientist at Change Research, you will be uniquely positioned to have the tools you build play a vital role in these decisions.

Data science has been a core ingredient in developing Change Research’s innovative survey methodology. It guides how we reach survey respondents, how we design and weight our surveys, and how we keep improving our techniques. It is also a core part of Change Research’s future. Data science will continue to improve our methods for acquiring survey respondents as well as develop new products grounded in our wealth of up-to-date survey data and new machine learning techniques.

Position Summary

As a Senior Data Scientist, you’ll be involved in all aspects of our analytics, research, model development, and data pipeline. We’re a small but growing company and each team member contributes in a meaningful way. We interview millions of voters through our platform — a novel dataset with tremendous utility for political campaigns, government officials, advocacy organizations, and other causes.

This is a permanent, full-time, remote position and may require occasional travel and reports to the Head of Engineering & Data Science.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Partner with the product manager and engineering team on coming up with ideas for and developing fundamentally new public opinion products using artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data analysis using our massive dataset of survey respondents
  • Partner with the product manager and polling team to test and implement improvements to our polling methodology, such as optimizing our methods to reach survey respondents
  • Own, improve, and create new versions of our internal machine-learning models that support the polling process
  • Work with the product manager and engineering team to design data pipelines that allow the polling team to analyze data across polls and over time
  • Help evaluate and decide when it’s best to build and when it’s best to buy

A successful candidate will have:

  • 3+ years of data analysis and building machine learning models in a Python-heavy codebase.
  • Strong SQL skills, as a way to engage with our core datasets and to help provide insights to the company.
  • Experience with a data infrastructure stack — we use Redis, Google Cloud Platform (DataFlow, BigQuery, Cloud Run), Apache Beam, and MySQL all with Docker, but we believe experience in other stacks will translate.
  • The curiosity to try new things, but the self-discipline to prize results over technique.
  • Excitement to think about gaps in our tooling as opportunities for our team to improve and expand its data infrastructure, build new products, and surface new insights.

Compensation and Work Environment:

The annual salary range is $130,000 to $170,000, based on relevant experience, and includes these benefits:

  • fully remote work environment
  • competitive salary and equity packages with bonus potential
  • flexible paid time off and company holidays
  • company-subsidized health, dental, vision, and life insurance
  • access to pre-tax 401K retirement program
  • work-from-home office stipend
  • paid parental leave

Our workplace is both casual and professional, and we are committed to learning, fun, and excellence. Everyone on our team works hard and is dedicated to the work we are doing. You must be authorized to work in the United States.

If you are selected to interview, our process includes:

  • Preliminary video interview: Approx. 30 min
  • At-home exercise: Approx. 1 hr 30 min
  • Additional video interviews: Approx. 1 hr
  • Video interview with manager: Approx. 1hr
  • Reference Checks (we may do these earlier in the process)
