We aim to co-create these solutions in direct partnership with those who hold the knowledge and expertise of their local needs and environmental context.

The Center aims to contribute to the global community who are similarly working to take on these challenges in four key areas:

  • Generating ground-breaking computational/data science discoveries motivated by pressing environmental questions;
  • Producing scalable solutions to critical threats facing the environment, powered by open-source tools;
  • Deploying these solutions widely, taking advantage of modern cloud infrastructure and open data/open software, and maintaining a design philosophy of vendor neutrality to ensure that community needs are prioritized;
  • Creating an enhanced pipeline of young environmental leaders connected to local communities and organizations to meet their needs and translate our research findings and technological developments into practical impacts.

  • Leverages existing open source applications where applicable and develops and contributes new code and features when current applications are insufficient.
  • Understands how to evaluate all technical options, decide the best path forward, and develop upon the chosen path both as a contributor and as a technical leader guiding additional research engineers.
  • Works with research communities and users to develop, implement, and optimize computational and data analysis/analytics software/tools/algorithms/research codes with broad applicability.
  • Iteratively designs new code and functionality while concurrently testing with a variety of potential users to understand use cases and improve the applications.
  • Works with environmental domain experts to ensure that the applications being developed accurately represent the science behind them.
  • Understands and applies advanced research and development practices, open source programming principles, community standards and department policies and procedures.
  • Serves as technical lead for research and development projects of moderate to broad Scope.
