Senior Director, Analytics

It turns out… unicorns are real! In fact, FreshBooks just became one after raising our valuation to more than $1 billion. And ever since launching in 2003, we’ve been on a steady incline towards one goal: Building easy-to-use accounting software for small business owners. It’s the goal that’s driven us to expand into five offices, serving customers in over 160 countries. And it’s the goal we’d love for you to be a part of as a member of our global team as we continue our journey.

Known for extraordinary product and customer service experiences and based in Toronto, Canada, FreshBooks serves paying customers in over 120 countries, with offices in the U.S., Netherlands and Croatia.

The Opportunity:

FreshBooks is seeking a versatile, curious, and deliberate leader to manage an existing Analytics team. Reporting to the Chief Data Officer, the leader will take the reins of a growing, diverse group of Analysts, Managers, and Analytics Engineers to support all elements of analytics, reporting, and BI for Freshbooks’ executive, finance, sales, support, marketing, and product teams. In addition to managing the department, the successful candidate will be a key member of the leadership team. They will be critical in identifying opportunities and translating ‘data speak’ across multiple stakeholder teams with distinct expertise and backgrounds.

Furthermore, we are seeking an individual with just enough skills and experience in sales, support, finance, marketing, engineering, governance, and data sciences to be ‘dangerous.’ They will be a bridge between business and data needs. The team will need to be agile and reactive with MVP solutions when necessary, and also intentionally slow the pace and plan for the longer-term, scalable solutions when urgent matters are resolved.

With a wide exposure and broad stakeholder group, from hands-on operators to execs and all levels in-between, you’ll need to be a natural storyteller and adjust on the fly. Analytical projects never truly end, and each answer and learning brings new possibilities.

Specifically in this position, you will:

  • Provide thought leadership and act as a subject matter expert in the design and development of appropriate analytical approaches and methodologies in addressing key issues across the business
    • Deliver long term strategic and operational planning on BI platforms and related tech stack
    • Deliver long term analytical projects & quick turn around investigations on performance and tactical scenarios
    • Root problem identification / order of operations to avoid duplicated and inefficient work execution
    • Storytelling and distillation of technically complex situations to non-technical stakeholders
  • Lead and develop a growing, high performing, global, multi-functional team of analysts who consistently execute on deliverables
    • Organize, plan and adhere to budget for team members, tools and training
  • Partner and engage cross-functionally with key stakeholders across business unit leadership teams, product management, data, operations, finance, marketing, and sales to ensure alignment to objectives
    • Testing and evaluation of customer facing campaign and feature changes
    • Product measurement, engagement, use case experience
    • Reporting requests and enable Self-Serve BI for all FreshBooks business units
    • Interpret business needs to define, develop and manage strategic KPI-based measurement plans
  • Assist in the maintenance and enhancement of pipeline tools that deliver data for analytical purposes
  • Provide guidance and troubleshooting data quality issues and questions from originating tools (marketing and sales execution tools)
  • Identify and escalate smaller symptomatic requests / projects that indicate the need for a larger project or initiative
  • Identify and assist in addressing projects and initiatives that have  data and analytics implications to other projects and stakeholders
  • Vendor and partner negotiations for software, research, consulting

What you have:

  • Experience leading data and analytics teams at a high-growth technology company
  • The ability to attract and recruit top talent, motivate the team, delegate effectively, celebrate diversity within the team, and manage performance; widely viewed as a strong developer of others.
  • Highly collaborative, with the ability to work cross-functionally and provide insights and solutions to various stakeholders across the business
  • Experience managing large, remote teams and working with global stakeholders
  • Familiarity with Finance, Support, Sales & Marketing principles, strategies and general tech stacks as well as Data Science and Data Engineering principles, issues, use cases, techniques etc.
