Job Description

What's the role? 

Etsy is looking for an accomplished Engineering Manager to head its Knowledge Base team. The manager will direct and supervise a talented group of Applied Scientist and Machine Learning Engineers building a clear understanding of Etsy’s marketplace including sellers, buyers, listings, and images. In this role, you will build the vision and technical roadmap of Etsy’s Knowledge Base; and execute them along with the team.  We are looking for an engineering leader who is comfortable managing a large scope and has the passion & experience to lead Etsy in building an industry-leading knowledge base and graph.

This is a full-time position reporting to the Senior Manager, Data Science. For this role, we are considering candidates based in the U.S. who are either remote, flex or office-based.  What does the day-to-day look like?

  • Hire, manage and coach applied scientists and machine learning engineers. 
  • Lead the vision of building the Etsy knowledge ecosystem (knowledge base, knowledge graph, structured data) and be responsible for its technical roadmap.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders and executives across Etsy to make prioritization decisions that balance business needs with platform objectives.
  • Drive technical strategy for the group that meets business and product needs, for example, guiding teams to find the right balance between new model development and infrastructure complexity.
  • Advise leadership and executives, evangelizing across the company the need to build modern Knowledge infrastructure that enables innovative algorithms in production.

Qualifications

Qualities that will help you thrive in this role are: 

  • You have at least 2 years of experience in leading and coaching applied scientists and/or machine learning engineers. 
  • You have a solid understanding of state-of-the-art machine learning and knowledge-base techniques. You have experience in delivering ML into production using publicly available technologies.
  • You have experience communicating with non-engineers and executives about deeply technical products.
  • You have experience leading an engineering group and track records of attracting high-caliber engineers, and scientists.
  • B.S. in Computer Science or related field (M.S. or PhD preferred).
  • Track record of building a large-scale knowledge graph is a strong plus.
