Job Description

What’s the role?

Etsy is hiring a Senior Machine Learning Engineer to join the Risk Engineering organization. Etsy is a global marketplace with 90+ million buyers, 7+ million sellers, and 97M+ unique, handmade and vintage items. Our team keeps Etsy a safe and trusted marketplace by building sophisticated and scalable ML technologies to detect and prevent risk and fraud.

We are looking for individuals who are product and delivery-driven and passionate about applying ML to deliver customer impact. Our work takes on pressing, real-world problems, including detection of transactional fraud, fake account creation, collusion fraud, and more. As a member of the product team, this role is a great opportunity to collaborate with experienced ML professionals on large-scale projects protecting millions of users.

This is a full-time position reporting to the Applied ML Engineering Manager, Trust & Safety. For this role, we are considering candidates based in the United States who are either remote, flex, or office-based. Etsy offers different work modes to meet the variety of needs and preferences of our team. Learn more about our flexible work options and vaccination policy here.

What’s this team like at Etsy?

Example Projects

  • Solve customer and business problems (e.g. protecting against seller fraud, transactional fraud, account takeover, fake accounts) using machine learning techniques (e.g. deep neural networks, graph ML, unsupervised and semi-supervised anomaly detection)

  • Take ideas and scale them to millions to users. We develop and implement end-to-end plans, including idea generation, project planning, model development, production model serving, and ownership of model performance.

  • Architect new or improved existing ML systems, including building data architectures (e.g. large-scale graph data processing and storage), enabling faster and more robust model development, and improving model serving and orchestration.

What does the day-to-day look like?

  • Prototype, optimize, and product-ionize large-scale ML models that help deliver key results

  • Develop production code for data pipelining, ML infrastructure management, and integrating ML services with broader Etsy systems

  • Conduct A/B experiments to validate the effectiveness of ML models and pipelines

  • Push the state of the art and apply the latest advances in deep learning and other machine learning techniques to improve trust and safety on Etsy

  • Work closely with product managers, ML engineers, full-stack engineers, and designers on a product team to protect ~100 million users

  • Of course, this is just a sample of the kinds of work this role will require! You should assume that your role will encompass other tasks, too, and that your job duties and responsibilities may change from time to time at Etsy's discretion, or otherwise applicable with local law.

Qualifications

Qualities that will help you thrive in this role are:

Basic Requirements

  • A graduate degree (M.S./Ph.D.) in similar fields (e.g., computer science, industrial engineering, applied math, statistics) and 3+ years of proven experience in ML infrastructure; or an undergraduate degree in related fields and 5+ years of proven experience in ML infrastructure.

  • Extensive experience deploying, debugging, and fine-tuning machine learning models in large-scale production systems in public clouds (e.g., GCP, AWS, or Azure), with experience in Infrastructure as Code (e.g., Terraform).

  • Proven software development skills. You are comfortable with using git, Linux environments, dockers, and other tools for writing robust, production-ready code.

Preferred Requirements

  • Focused experience deploying one of the following types of models in production at scale: graph models, unsupervised anomaly detection, deep learning, natural language processing, or reinforcement learning.

  • Experience using Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
