Staff Data Scientist

Staff Data Scientist

Company Overview

At Particle Health, we connect our customers to national and state medical record exchanges, which facilitates medical record sharing and interoperability.  That also gives us access to arguably some of the best fully longitudinal data on millions of patients.  Powered by this data, we are building a data platform offering important clinical insights to our customers.

About the Role

As a company, a key to our success is in analyzing healthcare data and creating new insights to help our customers treat patients, so we are growing our data science function.  We have access to some very compelling data sets, primarily EHR, that are enabled by recent healthcare interoperability regulations.  We are looking for a seasoned expert who will help formulate and execute strategies for new data products and insights for our customers.

As a member of the Particle Health Data Science team, you will be a key leader in shaping and executing foundational components of our analytics strategy, helping to define key models for some of the most interesting and challenging problems in healthcare. As a recognized expert on experiment design and statistical significance within the company, you will play a crucial role in identifying the limits of inference within our data and work closely with product and engineering to identify new analytical products, helping to ensure that our product roadmap continues to evolve toward products that are not only desirable, but feasible and viable as well. You will also contribute to our AI & NLP roadmap, which will become increasingly important over time.

A “day in the life” of a Staff Data Scientist at Particle will almost certainly involve a lot of curiosity– being willing to talk to stakeholders, investigate the complexities of patient-level data. You’ll work directly with executive leadership to help define Particle’s analytics strategy in the marketplace. You will think critically about how we can isolate key outcomes within our data and build models showcasing approaches toward identifying treatment adherence, gaps in care, risk scoring, and more. And you will work very closely with the data engineering function to ensure that these are carried through into production.

What You’ll Do:

  • Help establish Particle as a leader in healthcare data space; be an expert, trusted voice on Particle’s data landscape
  • Work directly with executive leadership (including our CEO, who is a Data Scientist himself) to define an overall analytics strategy.
  • Work directly with product and engineering leadership to scope and prioritize the most valuable opportunities within our data.
  • Collaborate with other data scientists, data engineers and clinical experts.  Lead projects to create new models, features, and data products and help deploy them to production.
  • Identify gaps in data and help determine an acquisition strategy to expand the range of possible applications.
  • Solve problems both through in-house efforts as well as finding creative ways to partner with other companies or open source initiatives.

What We Look For:

  • Deep experience with healthcare data (especially EHR or Claims data), including clinical applications and / or risk stratification.
  • Ability to translate business goals and domain understanding into analytics strategy, as well as ability to implement the strategies through a variety of supervised and unsupervised analytics techniques.
  • Critical thinking and a passion for problem solving– the best candidate will be someone who has an innate curiosity and ability to break down complex data sets to isolate key outcomes
  • Creativity in the face of data limitations– you’ll have as much room to frame the questions as you will to find the answers, in many cases, and creativity about how we approach our market will be a great asset
  • Strong technical experience - we use SQL & Python, specifically Spark.
  • Commitment to end-to-end delivery– the best candidate will be someone who’s energized by seeing their work carried directly into the hands of end users, and wants to take an active role in productionalization
  • Communication of complex technical concepts to nontechnical-stakeholders

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of experience developing complex ML / statistical models
  • Experience with Value Based Care organizations and needs.
  • Master's degree in a technical field or equivalent practical experience.
  • Experience with both supervised and unsupervised ML modeling techniques, with a contextual understanding of the limitations and advantages of each
  • Experience with healthcare data & formats (e.g. CCDA, FHIR)
  • Experience with de-identification techniques / statistical re identification risk
