The Role 

One Concern is growing rapidly and we are looking for a passionate, mission-driven Staff Data Scientist, Energy & Sustainability to join our team.

This role requires specialized skills in energy, renewables, climate, and energy financing domains; and an ability to understand the customer needs and industry trends. Energy & Climate Solutions Strategist will work with the customers and multidisciplinary teams in the US and Japan to develop the strategy and specifications for our solution for various customers. 

What You’ll Do

    • Develop technical specifications for evolving One Concern’s products and solutions for climate risk adaptation, energy resilience, sustainability, and financing, targeted at enterprises, insurers, banks, asset managers, and cities. 
    • Work closely with various cross-functional teams at One Concern (Solutions, Data Science,  Engineering, Product Management, and Business Development) to design and build innovative and practical solutions and product offerings.
    • Drive innovation within One Concern to stay ahead of client needs and to differentiate our offerings in the market.
    • Help One Concern evolve its current value proposition for climate adaptation and energy resilience with our target clients across sectors by being active in the market, listening to clients, developing new service offerings, and delivering high-quality and impactful solutions to our clients.
    • Keep up-to-date on the latest sustainable and resilient energy technologies and their financing methods, climate and energy risk financing market trends, and public-private partnerships approach. 
    • Conduct quantitative research, business, and financial analysis for new opportunities in the resilient energy space, climate adaptation, and financing markets, and identify relevant use cases for the applications of the One Concern resilience platform of those markets.
    • Support the Solutions Team in presenting new sustainable and resilient energy alternatives and financing solutions to client decision-makers, including (re)insurance managers, asset managers, enterprise CROs and CFOs.
    • Interact with customers to understand the requirements, field technical questions, and provide details on our technical solutions. 
    • Create customer-ready materials to position One Concern solutions to the customers successfully.

Qualifications & Experience

    • At least five (5) years of relevant experience in renewable energy technologies,  and their associated advantages, risks, and financing mechanisms.
    • Demonstrated experience of working on sustainable energy and climate adaptation approaches and financing options for enterprises (via financial instruments like loans, bonds, insurance a plus). 
    • At least (3) years of experience analytically assessing resilience, sustainability, and ROI of energy solutions  ( (re)insurance, catastrophe modeling, or actuarial experience domains a big plus).
    • MS or Ph.D. degree in Environmental Engineering, Energy Engineering, Computer Science, Finance, Economics, Mathematics, Actuarial Science, Statistics, Engineering, or a related technical field.
    • Demonstrated experience of working on new solutions working with customers and teams in a multidisciplinary environment, preferably in energy and/or climate space.
    • Strong communication, quantitative and analytical skills.
    • Creative, innovative mindset for identifying and solving open-ended problems.
    • High willingness and flexibility to travel (domestic/international) - potentially >25% travel under normal, post COVID-19 conditions.

Nice to Haves

    • Experience of working for/with (re)insurance companies or brokers, asset managers, or climate finance companies will be a big plus. 
    • Hands-on experience developing proof of concepts and prototypes that involve financial modeling, and data science/machine learning.
    • Good understanding of the (re)insurance/financial sector, climate risk and climate finance industry, and private sector/public-private partnerships approaches for climate adaptation. 
    • Work experience with multinational / Japanese customers will be a big plus.
Compensation will be competitive with market for this position and will include equity consideration.
