The Data Engineering Manager will lead, mentor, and grow Citrine’s Data Engineering team. Top candidates will have interdisciplinary experience building and managing data solutions in scientific R&D settings and managing teams to foster growth.

About the Role

Data are the lifeblood of both Citrine and our customers. To our customers, their data not only represent the distilled knowledge of decades worth of research, but also the foundation from which they can build artificial intelligence models of materials behavior using the Citrine platform. The data engineering team is on the front line of our customer interactions, working with customers to determine the best path for rolling out the Citrine data platform to their R&D organization. They work closely with our customers to map their current data workstreams, recommend new data management best practices, and build robust tooling to ingest, validate, and structure their data onto the Citrine data platform. As manager of this extraordinary team, you would foster professional growth, drive focus and prioritization, and establish positive team norms and best practices.

Projects your team will work on

    • Close partnership with our materials development customers to ingest and properly represent their data on the platform
    • Data workflow mapping with key customers to drive specific recommendations for data management and prioritization for ingestion
    • An extensible, modular pipeline for ingesting heterogeneous data types

Responsibilities

    • Lead a team of data engineers who help our customers use the Citrine Platform to manage their data effectively
    • Establish team norms and best practices for code quality, software architecture, customer interactions, and data cleaning and validation
    • Optimize team productivity by effective prioritization, efficient communication pathways, and careful resource planning
    • Set expectations around team goals and individual responsibilities
    • Direct the career development and technical growth of the team through mentorship, coaching, and meaningful performance feedback
    • Enable opportunities for professional growth and impactRecruit and hire excellent data engineers who are passionate about Citrine’s vision

Skills and Experience

    • Managerial:
    • Team management experience
    • A demonstrated passion for mentorship
    • Excellent technical communication skills, written and verbal
    • Technical:
    • 3-5 years experience in data engineering: ETL, data validation, relational and non-relational databases
    • Experience building data pipelines for scientific R&D applications
    • Degree in the physical sciences (physics, chemistry, materials science)
    • Python programming, with experience coding in collaborative environments

Preferred Skills and Experience

    • Experience building data pipelines in an industrial Materials Science/Chemistry lab environment
    • Experience managing a customer-facing or forward-deployed data engineering team

Compensation and Pay Transparency 

At Citrine, we want your path to career growth to be transparent, straightforward, fair, and easily accessible -- starting with your application and interview process. The annual salary range listed below reflects the level we are considering for this position (please note that there may be unique situations where you may fall outside of this range). Where you fall within the range will depend on how your experience and skills align to our internal leveling system as we learn more about you throughout the interview process. 

$150,000 USD - $170,000 USD

*Range(s) listed are for full-time employees based in the United States only.
**Colorado only: disclosure above meets the requirement by sb19-085(8-5-20).
