What are we looking for?

BetterHelp is looking for a Data Science Intern to help us scale and increase our impact. You will use data to drive insight into the product and business. The ideal candidate would have experience/exposure to analyzing large and complex data sets related to web products. You'll be doing plenty of data wrangling and post-hoc analysis, both to support product improvements, marketing efficiency, and business decisions.

What will you do?

  • Language Model Optimization: Engage in the refinement and enhancement of language models, including fine-tuning and retraining to meet specific requirements.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Actively collaborate with the product and development teams to conceptualize and design effective machine learning models and algorithms tailored to our products' needs.
  • Product Enhancement Partnership: Work closely with product managers, initiating and implementing proactive strategies to elevate the functionality and user experience of our products.
  • Data Handling Expertise: Handle extensive text data, demonstrating proficiency in managing, analyzing, and deriving insights from large datasets.
  • Coding for Production: Develop and maintain production-ready code, ensuring robustness and efficiency. Collaborate with the DevOps and ML-Ops teams to integrate machine learning models seamlessly into production environments.
  • Database Proficiency: Write and optimize SQL queries, showcasing your ability to interact with and manipulate databases effectively.

Can I work remotely?

Yes. We operate in Pacific Time and candidates in any time zone are welcome to apply.

  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a PhD program in a quantitative discipline such as Computer Science/Engineering, Statistics, Mathematics,Operations Research, or Engineering 
  • Completed coursework in NLP and LLM
  • Deep understanding of neural networks and deep learning and generative AI
  • Familiarity with reinforcement learning
  • Experience building predictive models and causal inference models
  • Familiarity with generative AI
  • Experience analyzing large and complex data sets 
  • Experience using tools like Pytorch(preferably) or Tensorflow
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to simplify complex topics and communicate technical ideas to non-technical audiences

Bonus (Great to have but not required)

  • Experience analyzing two-sided marketplaces
  • Experience with B2C, marketplace products
  • Experience with BI tools like Tableau and Looker

The hourly rate for this position is $40/hr.
