Who We Are
At OtterTune, we make database optimization simple. Our main offering is a cloud service that uses machine learning (ML) to automate the difficult process of database performance tuning. Based on cutting-edge database and ML research at Carnegie Mellon University, OtterTune analyzes a customer's database activity and learns the best configuration for it, thereby boosting database performance and lowering costs. OtterTune's recommendations frequently outperform those of experienced database administrators.

About the Role
We are hiring a Data Scientist to power up our product and business decision-making abilities. This position will involve setting up data models and extracting new knowledge from the database telemetry data (e.g., AWS Performance Insights metrics) that OtterTune collects. An example of a question that our Data Scientist could answer with this data is what is the most common performance problem in a category of databases. Another could be how a customer's database changes when they upgrade versions. Such information will guide critical strategic decisions as we scale up our product. You will work closely with leadership, the product team, and the engineering team to carry out your work. You will also work with the marketing team to publicly discuss and present findings from your analysis outside of the company to promote OtterTune's ability to help database users.

This role is a unique opportunity to join OtterTune in the early stages of its development where you can make a significant impact on the growth and adoption of our state-of-the-art product.

You Will

    • Design, build, and deploy analytics pipelines to empower business and product analysis and help us better understand our users.
    • Build dashboards and visualizations for both internal and external consumption (e.g., blog posts, social media, presentations).
    • Watch data trends and work with leadership to drive prioritization decisions.
    • Work with the marketing team to develop novel insights about how customers use databases across different application domains.

You Might be a Fit for the Role if You Have

    • 3+ years working as a Data Scientist (or related role).
    • A degree in a quantitative field (such as Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, or related field).
    • Experience building data visualizations and dashboards powered by statistical analysis used to inform business decisions.
    • Experience with implementing anomaly detection pipelines.
    • Experience with scripting languages such as Python, R, or a similar language.
    • Advanced experience with SQL and using data warehouse or database technologies (e.g., dbt, Legend).
    • Some experience using and administering MySQL or PostgreSQL databases (only a bonus).
We Would Still Like to Hear From You
Humans never stop learning. Everyone learns on the job, no matter what job it is. OtterTune employees are encouraged to take time to level up their skills. Even if you do not check all of the boxes, please reach out to us about this position if you are interested.
