Do you have a passion for diving deep to uncover key insights that drive critical business decisions? Pitt’s Center for Research Computing and Pitt IT are searching for a strategic and inquisitive data scientist who is passionate about deriving knowledge and insights from data to ideate, develop, and implement data-centered projects. Fully-remote and hybrid options are available. The data scientist will exercise their knowledge of descriptive and multivariate statistical techniques and applications, and database analysis tools and techniques to develop strategic insights to drive research and business goals. We will rely on you to work with stakeholders to identify data science use cases and their potential value, and then work with a team of analytics and data experts to identify, acquire, and cleanse data; create data science models; and deploy those models to dashboards and applications to realize business value.

You will work in the advanced computing community, develop high fidelity models, and utilize leading edge technologies and methodologies such as: high performance computing on state-of-the-art CPUs and GPUs, containerized workflows for machine learning and AI, data exploration and visualization, programming in R, Python, SAS, MatlabGraph analysis, image analysis, and predictive analytics in social media. You should be an analytical problem solver who enjoys diving into data, is excited about investigations and algorithms, can multi-task, and can credibly interface between technical teams, researchers, and management. Your analytical abilities, business understanding, and technical savvy will be used to identify specific and actionable opportunities to solve existing research and business problems and look around corners for future opportunities.

Preferred: Master’s or PhD in a quantitative, statistical, or other field that requires advanced statistical knowledge and application. However, combination of education, experience and/or industry certifications will be considered in lieu of education. Minimum 5 years experience working with complex data sets using advanced statistics or machine learning. R and/or Python, statistics, reshaping data. Hands-on experience in Linux environments is required.
