As a Data Scientist III, you’ll be reporting into the Decision Science team and playing a pivotal role in designing and operationalizing advanced analytics and AI solutions within our AWS environment. You’ll need to be a self-starter who is curious with strong critical thinking and problem solving abilities. Your experience will be crucial in mentoring junior data scientists and helping to lead through design, methodology and approach in complex projects. You will be developing models in a Jupyter environment and deploying them for use in production on AWS.

Location: Remote, US

Role qualifications:

  • Experience: 5+ years of experience in data science, with a proven track record of designing and implementing data-driven solutions and bachelor’s degree (CS, Math, Data Science, engineering or other quantitative field)
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in working with Pandas, Scikit-learn, and PyTorch. Good understanding of Python application development.
  • Healthcare Domain Knowledge: Experience in the healthcare sector is highly desirable, with an understanding of healthcare data standards and regulations (e.g., HIPAA).
  • Mentorship Experience: Previous experience mentoring or leading junior data scientists or analytics professionals.
  • Problem-Solving: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to translate complex data into actionable insights.
  • Communication: Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.

Nice to have:

  • Experience working with large scale healthcare claims and clinical data
  • Familiar with healthcare data standards
  • Experience with (preferably) AWS or another public Cloud Platform services and tools
  • Familiarity with Terraform and git
  • Experience working in an “Agile” and/or “Scrum” development environment using tools such as JIRA
  • Knowledge/experience with of MLOps concepts.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design & Development: Lead the design, development, and deployment of scalable data science models and solutions that support healthcare technology initiatives within our AWS technology stack.
  • Operationalize Solutions: Ensure data science solutions are effectively operationalized, enabling smooth integration into existing systems and processes, particularly within AWS.
  • Mentorship: Provide guidance, coaching, and mentorship to junior data scientists, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
  • Roadmap Contribution: Collaborate with leadership to define and drive the decision science team’s roadmap, aligning projects with organizational goals.
  • Cross-functional Collaboration: Work closely with data engineers, software developers, product managers, and other stakeholders to ensure data solutions meet business needs.
  • Innovation: Stay updated on the latest data science trends and technologies, bringing innovative approaches to problem-solving within the team.

What you will be doing:

  • Solve business problems and discover meaningful business narratives told by the data by performing data exploration and mining and applying statistical techniques and machine learning algorithms.
  • Conduct research and collaborate with business stakeholders following design thinking principals to understand requirements and then design solutions that meet business objectives.
  • Extract and manipulate large data sets, leveraging tools including Python, PySpark and SQL
  • Demonstrate solution/algorithm feasibility by developing prototypes and communicating risk and limitations that may impact deliverables.
  • Write production-quality, optimized code using test-driven development practices and applying data-driven QA to guide the creation of clearly documented, clean quality software.
  • Perform team code review for production-ready software solutions, giving feedback to teammates, where appropriate, on opportunities for improvement of coding practices.
  • Identify areas where automation could increase team efficiency and independently design and implement useful automated solutions.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to junior data scientists, modeling effective working relationships and solution-building that demonstrates team and Availity culture and values.
  • Support project timeline estimation and planning efforts.
  • Communicate actionable insights to internal stakeholders and clients.
