About the Role

Coalition is looking for a data scientist to join our rapidly growing data science team to find a solution to underwriting challenges. You will use analytics, experimentation, and modern statistical techniques to help us identify and improve our underwriting system. you will be accountable for growing our revenue in a safe and efficient manner, from informing pricing strategies to better market segmentation to identifying/executing further automation opportunities.
 
This role requires an aptitude to partner with our head of underwriting and other key stakeholders to quickly identify emerging trends in our underwriting data and effectively communicate clear, actionable strategies across the company. 

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate our current underwriting practices and compare them against industry trends
  • Assess intricate processes and workflows to identify and implement improvements to increase productivity and improve cycle time.
  • Assist reporting, analytics, and machine-learning needs of the entire Underwriting team
  • Proactively drive conversations with key business stakeholders to drive continuous underwriting improvements
  • Guide the company's underwriting + pricing KPIs, assessments, and data visualizations
  • Assist the company's governance, risk, and compliance programs as they relate to our pricing/underwriting systems
  • Create and maintain documentation that will assist the effective implementation of repeatable processes and workflows
  • Spread data science top practices to both data science and underwriting team

Skills and Qualifications

  • 2+ years of experience in a professional analytics / data science capacity
  • Experience writing SQL queries to extract and prepare data for modeling and assessments
  • Strong logical skills with the experience to collect, organize, assess, and disseminate significant amounts of information with attention to detail and accuracy
  • Experience to think objectively and interpret meaningful themes from quantitative and qualitative data
  • Experience to build constructive and effective relationships with a broad and diverse group of business partners
  • Comfortable guiding others, recommending tools and standard methodologies to improve the efficiency of the teams work
  • Strong communication skills and aptitude to convey intricate topics to non-technical audiences
  • Passionate about subjects such as experimental design, data visualization, and statistical assessment techniques

Bonus Points

  • Experience working in Tableau/Looker or similar data visualization tool a big plus
  • Experience within the insurance or financial services industry, with a focus on underwriting
  • Experience with Python or R
  • A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Economics, Statistics or related technical field
