We are seeking a curious, passionate, and determined individual to join the team as a Data Team Manager. This individual will optimize the achievement of business objectives through owning the development and execution of a technical vision for cutting-edge AWS-based data pipelines supporting new product offerings and data science efforts, and ensuring deployed systems uphold required levels of performance.

This individual will manage a team of data engineers and scientists, including recruitment, mentorship, and day-to-day tasking.

This individual will partner with related roles such as product managers, project managers, technical leads, and stakeholders.

Responsibilities focused on Leadership & Mentoring:

    • Partner with other technical leaders to develop strategies for rolling out new technologies, sunsetting old technologies, or optimizing existing technologies.
    • Supervise the work of team members to ensure it is completed to acceptable standards of efficiency, quality, security, and privacy.
    • Mentor and manage performance of a high-performing team of data scientists and engineers and display continued growth of the skillset of the entire team.
    • Excels at getting the team to focus on the highest-impact projects and milestones.
    • Able to lead hiring efforts and determine headcount for their team.
    • Leads team in work breakdown and planning.
    • Leads delivery of major initiatives on clear timelines.
    • Manages independently; communicates context to the team and surfaces requirements to upper management.
    • Sets clear expectations for team members; solicits, synthesizes and delivers feedback.
    • Comfortable managing team members with different skill sets and technical areas of focus.

This role will lead the team in:

    • Proactively developing and executing data strategies to move the business forward.
    • Successfully executing on quarterly team and individual goals.
    • Engaging with key stakeholders to maintain expertise on current business challenges and open questions.
    • Understanding how Dwolla compares to similar companies in the FinTech space, and areas where we are ahead or behind and the impact of those differences.
    • Communicating timeline, scope and technical concerns; proactively identifying and clearing roadblocks.
    • Successful completion of required security, privacy, and compliance trainings on an annual basis, and reinforcement of these requirements with members of the team.

Skill And Experience Criteria:

    • Experience with software engineering best practices as they apply to data extraction, conditioning, and analysis in a production infrastructure-as-code, CI/CD environment.
    • Experience with Agile principles and ceremonies.
    • Experience with AWS data-related services (such as RDS, Aurora, Glue, S3, Athena, RedShift, SageMaker, and Quicksight).
    • Experience with relational databases and SQL queries, performing complex queries across multiple tables to extract information. 
    • Experience with Python and common data science-related libraries and tools such as Jupyter Notebooks.
    • Basic knowledge of statistical concepts (regressions, statistical tests, distributions, etc), application of the scientific method, and experience with machine learning libraries is a plus.
    • High capacity to be autonomously proactive, forward-looking, and curious.
    • Able to work collaboratively with internal partners and stakeholders to solve problems, executive complex projects, and deliver value to Dwolla’s competitive advantage.
    • Strong analytical thinking and troubleshooting skills.
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
    • Typically requires 5+ years of experience in a closely-related role, with 2+ years in a management role. Education and certifications are valued and may contribute towards this criteria as applicable.
