The Director of Business Data will report to the VP of IT and optimize how internal teams share data to unlock actionable business intelligence. This team serves as the data hub in a hub-and-spoke model supporting Docker’s engineering, product development, go-to-market (sales, marketing, customer success) and G&A teams. The Director will lead a team of high-performing data engineers, analysts and scientists to build Docker’s next-generation data framework. This role is responsible for data governance, infrastructure management, advanced modeling and providing the foundation for machine learning. As it is highly cross-functional, this role supports a bias for considered action and open collaboration across the entire organization by furnishing every team with immediate access to data. Success in this role requires a strong people manager that can invest in the growth of both technical experts and aspiring leaders, as well as the ability to manage via influence across the data professionals nested within partnering orgs.

This Business Data team will have a tremendous impact on the future of Docker’s growth as the vision is to provide the foundation for business intelligence fueling critical insights across the company. This position will be a core member of the IT leadership team with opportunities to stretch beyond the bounds of the initial charter. This Director will work with the core executive team at Docker to best understand near term and long term data needs, as well as report on progress of data optimization throughout the company. This role will also serve as a trusted consultant for org-wide initiatives focused on verticals outside of the core responsibilities. This role will also serve as a leadership resource for founding technical teams.

Responsibilities:

  • Accountable to establish, provide, maintain and own Docker’s single source of truth for data

  • Facilitate discussions with business leaders to identify their data capabilities and align on objectives

  • Maintain business capability, data and processes while transitioning data services to an optimized state

  • As a cross-functional leader, drive the documentation of data structures used throughout the business

  • Mature data models using a framework that delivers on near-term business needs, while optimizing for future needs at scale

  • Partner in the strategic planning process by providing input to the definition of initiatives while providing visibility to impact, dependencies, overlaps and opportunities.

  • Work closely with Engineers and Analysts to identify technical requirements, design, execute and evolve data models for use across multiple analytic solutions. 

  • Oversee data optimization projects across all business partners, from analysis through planning, design, development, implementation and evaluation

  • Present recommendations and solutions clearly and concisely 

  • Drive the adoption of a standard data architecture that accounts for data needs across the business

  • Take an active role in investment strategies by assessing and rationalizing proposed capabilities

  • Partner with senior business stakeholders to develop a strategic data roadmap for current and long-term needs, owning architecture-level decisions and ensuring tools are aligned with data needs and future proof for scale

  • Provide leadership, technical direction, and mentoring to maintain a high-performing, highly engaged team

  • Own vendor relationships and define process related to the evaluation and selection process of third-party systems/applications

  • Lead continuous analysis and improvement of data tech stack features, utilization, releases, best practices, and return on investments that align with the company & functional vision and strategy

  • Build strong feedback loops with business partners (Onboarding, Knowledge Management, Methodology, Instructional Design) to create synergies across the collective data stakeholders

  • Take a data-driven and analytical approach to prioritizing future initiatives and reporting on the success of the team’s work

Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of work experience in leading teams to build modern data architectures with a focus on learning and development with progressively increasing responsibility 

  • 6+ years of direct people management experience and a proven track record of developing both data professionals and people managers

  • Extensive experience with data governance and optimizing raw data for consumption using multiple tools

  • Experience setting strategy, driving change and delivering impact 

  • Experience owning implementing and architecting large centralized data stores

  • Experience driving vendor selection and contract negotiation

  • A strong track record of both internal stakeholder influence and vendor partner management

  • Program management experience leading multiple teams both technical and business

  • Track record of leading high-growth teams and scale in a startup environment

  • Applied knowledge of the OKR framework preferred

  • Strong analytical talents to identify key metrics and how to improve operations to yield measurable impact

  • Accomplished in building and managing an incident response framework for data teams

  • Experience of leading program management methodologies while comfortable applying agile, waterfall, and scrum

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and communicating to a variety of technical and non technical audiences in English

  • Successful track record of coaching new leaders and growing the careers of others

  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment to meet business needs at scale

  • Strong drive for continuous improvement

  • Highly organized with effective planning, budgeting and prioritization skills

What to expect in the first 30 days:

  • Institute scaleable crisis management systems covering every function of Data Operations

  • Learn the existing Service Level Agreements for each function of Data and identify top three areas of improvement.

  • Meet every cross-functional principal in neighboring orgs and discover their opinions on what works and what doesn’t. Then identify focus areas for optimization.

  • Identify existing gaps for immediate resourcing and provide compelling justification based on data

  • Deliver an initial data architecture plan and optimization roadmap with consideration for both near-term solutions and long-term strategies

  • Institute a bi-weekly update for executive consumption on the current state and status of the optimization plan

What to expect in the first 90 days:

  • Institute health metrics with a weekly review cadence to measure every data service complete with key performance indicators.

  • Deliver a 6-month forecast of service consumption and an 18-month service development roadmap

  • Track a metric to measure the ability of stakeholders to review new data sets the moment they are requested and build mechanisms to surface challenges and remediate

What to expect in the first year:

  • The Data team maintains pace with the data demands of Docker at scale with customer support averaging 2 hours for initial ticket response times and averaging 48 hours for ticket closure.

  • You’ve hired critical leadership positions to run day-to-day core functions of data operations without your direct engagement

  • All data services are SOC 2 compliant and managed with vigilant adherence to information security policies

  • Each service has met the initial performance target established and you are delivering business cases for resourcing new data service investments

  • All data served for consumption is confirmed factual and is updated within agreed-upon service level agreements. You are now focusing the team on the deployment of advanced data modeling and supporting machine learning.
