About the Director of Data Engineering of AI Role
The Head of Data Engineering for the AI group is a strategic position for all of Relativity.
You’ll work both within our team and across the company to leverage our data at scale. You’ll be building and managing a team of company-wide experts on big data storage, pipelines, streaming, micro-batch, and batch technologies. You’ll be partnering directly with our data scientists to create best in class tooling for managing our fleet of models. You’ll inspire software engineers to engage, learn, and focus on big data technologies. You’ll empower our data scientists and data engineers to dream bigger about what’s possible. Innovations that you help create and deliver will be running on Relativity’s global cloud footprint, powering billions of insights. You’ll focus every day on empowering your team via the best talent, tools, process, and technology investments. - Recruit and build a data engineering team via industry talks and posts, candidate outreach, networking, and partnerships.
- Own and facilitate key design decisions related to our big data and data science infrastructure and toolset.
- Organize the data engineering team so we are collaborative, effective, pragmatic, and efficient.
- Create and extend data lakes to enable data science at scale.
- Implement data quality systems to ensure data quality, consistency, security, compliance, and lineage.
- Lead large initiatives from an investment perspective via clear prioritization, thoughtful resource allocation, sweating the details, and great communication to inspire the team.
- Lead collaboration with our engineering teams, data scientists, and product managers to bring ideas from proof of concept to scaled solution.
- Prioritize technical investments roadmap and help prioritize tech debt and architecture investments.
- Mentor talent within the data engineering team to promote career development, risk taking, innovation, and create a culture of learning.
- Inspire others with a compelling vision and a plan of how big data technology can transform Relativity.
- Advise senior company and technology leadership on innovative tech for either partnership or acquisition.
- Encourage innovation and data curiosity and the use of data at scale.
- 5+ years building and leading big data systems and teams.
- Proven data chops via hands-on roles prior to management where you’ve personally delivered data engineering solutions in multiple roles.
- Proven leadership skills and track record of delivering complex technical solutions.
- Experience selecting products, tool, and vendor negotiation.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Experience creating batch and stream processing leveraging technologies like Hadoop/HDFS, Kafka, data pipelines, blob storage, distributed file systems, big data storage formats, SQL, no SQL, Python, Spark, JVM/Scala, and cloud data warehouses.
- Experience collaborating with data science teams with conceptual knowledge on data science project lifecycles and techniques.
- A track record of embracing progressive technology related to data management, pipelines, and processing.
- Experience developing and owning ETL/ELT and data pipelines using a variety of tools or frameworks.
- Experience creating processes and systems to manage data quality.
- Experience running systems in either AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure.
- Experience with standards such as GDPR and CCPA.
- Experience in Kubernetes via Python, Java, or Scala.
- Experience in a SaaS/Cloud environment with distributed teams and systems.
- Experience designing, building, and managing either data lakes, data marts, and data warehouses.
- Experience managing BI and creating customer insights/dashboards.
- Experience in machine learning and statistics.
- Experience with Azure cloud environment and Azure’s big data infrastructure, data processing, and data science toolset.
- Still hands-on as needed to drive proof of concepts to completion.
