About the Opportunity

We are looking to hire a Director of Data & Insights to lead and grow our current team of Data Engineers, Analytics Engineers and Data Analysts who support the data model, systems and insights that we need to make strategic decisions and run our hyper-growth business. As Netlify’s Director of Data & Insights, you are an organizational leader with a passion for data-driven decision making, operational excellence and know that a successful data & insights team is a prerequisite for hypergrowth. You’ll have a clear vision for how data can transform company strategy and execution. With our team, you’ll be hands-on with growing the careers of our Data Engineers, Analytics Engineers and Data Analysts through our start-up phase into a mature organization and you’ll be responsible for scaling the data function. You’ll ensure that the organization always approaches work with the goal of continuous improvement and driving business impact.

Some of the things you'll do: 

  • Your goal is to make the Data & Insights Organization more impactful with modern automated tooling and efficient analytics processes
  • Manage, mentor and grow a diverse, international team across 5+ time-zones, in a remote-first company
  • Develop personal and professional careers of Data Engineers, Analytics Engineers and Data Analysts
  • Experience hiring amazing data individual contributors and managers with outcome based leadership style tying team performance to business results
  • Create and execute a plan across the company to develop and mature our ability to measure and optimize business intelligence and insights that are mapped to our customer journey
  • Iterate and support a best in class data and BI tech stack to support a hyper-growth business model with >100%+ YoY growth
  • Have experience driving data and BI initiatives with companies that have a product led growth (PLG) and enterprise go-to-market (GTM) motions

What You'll Bring: 

  • A history of leading a team to design, implement and iterate on a modern data stack, supporting data-driven decisions across the company
  • A breadth of experience in managing and leading teams of 10+, which includes managers and individual contributor employees, and a track record of succeeding personally through the success of the team
  • A data product mindset, with experience identifying the signal from the noise
  • A history of hiring both early and experienced team members within both data analytics and data engineering and leading team members that build and manage large-scale data pipelines, data transformations/ETL’s, data modeling, etc
  • A high level of comfort with designing and implementing a data strategy roadmap with the ability to discuss the merits and tradeoffs based on business needs
  • Knowledge of various data technologies (dbt is a plus!), a deep familiarity with SQL, and the ability to lead the team through the process, challenges, and tradeoffs for various migrations (Read more here about how our team navigated our Databricks to Snowflake migration)
  • A high level of comfort working in a fully distributed, global environment 
  • Prior exposure to working for a hypergrowth technology startup is an added advantage and the ability to talk through, at least on a high level, the process, challenges, and trade-offs (internal and externally) of supporting a global products that’s used millions of times a day. 

Within 1 month, you’ll

  • Listen, Learn and connect with Netlify’s values, processes and remote first culture
  • Study and become acquainted in Netlify’s products, customers, partners and business model
  • Meet your team as well as the key counterparts across the rest of the organization in Product, Engineering, Marketing, Sales, DevX, People and Finance
  • Shadow members of the team as they fulfill planned initiatives and ad hoc data requests 
  • Identify key team needs and work with the COO to assess team capacity and headcount planning

Within 3 months, you'll:

  • Become very familiar with the current state of the Data Team projects and start building team roadmaps
  • Regularly collaborate with and update leadership on the progress of the Team and own the team metrics
  • Have regular career growth conversations with your direct reports and coach them in areas of improvement
  • Start contributing to 2-3 key projects across the organization
  • Complete an audit of our existing product, marketing, sales, customer, financial and HR data pipelines and sources
  • Work with the team to build a plan to address near-term pains and long-term architecture planning. For example, initiate a new project for enterprise-wide data & insights visualization platform to enable corporate decision making and departmental self-service

Within 6 months, you'll:

  • Be a trusted advisor to the Netlify leadership team on analytical and business insights
  • Create a common data framework enabling all company data to be analyzed in a unified manner while ensuring that each metric in the company’s dashboard has a single source of truth
  • Define, lead and track our Data & Insights team with key performance indicators, such as achievement of OKRs, data pipeline SLAs, self-service usage, departmental CSAT scores, etc.
  • Expand and continue to evolve the current culture on the analytics team of being proactive data and insights leaders to the business
  • Design and implement continuous people, process and technology consulting cadence for all of the data needs of the business
