About this Role:

Transfix is making huge investments in our Data & Analytics function, and we’re looking for a Director of Data Science to join and play a key role in the growth of Transfix. Reporting to the VP of Data & Analytics, this person will serve as a thought leader and subject matter expert in our Data Science function, and will manage our existing team as well as grow and scale the team to take our algorithms to the next level to help accelerate our already incredibly fast growth. 

In this role, you will evaluate our current business & technical systems, gain a deep understanding of our future state, and will hire, build, train, and develop a team of data scientists. You’ll define and strive to solve key business challenges by reframing core issues into solvable problems, partnering with product managers, engineers and managers, and a range of stakeholders to drive cross-departmentalization alignment, as well as position Transfix as a leading player in Data Science within the logistics space.

What You’ll Do In this Role:

    • Manage, develop, and recruit a growing team of data scientists; provide effective leadership and mentorship while fostering a culture of collaboration, autonomy, and excellence
    • Partner with stakeholders to understand key business challenges and priorities; present insights, unlock opportunities, and develop solutions that aim to address organizational roadblocks
    • Position yourself as a thought partner across the business by harnessing the power of data to drive effective decision making 
    • Define, manage and update project pipelines
    • Develop a thorough understanding of our current models and continuously find ways to improve their accuracy and efficiency
    • Streamline the adoption and usability of data science systems across the organization
    • Partner closely with talent acquisition team to define an effective recruitment strategy for data science with the goal of tripling the size of the team within your first year
    • Create, define, and deliver the data science roadmap for next 18-24 months by understanding business needs and prioritizations - and aligning the roadmap to business goals

How You Know this Role is For You:

    • You have 8+ years of experience working as a Data Scientist, Machine Learning Engineer or Applied Statistician
    • You have 5+ years of experience leading analytical teams and have preferably managed a team of Data Scientists that have deployed end models
    • You have a demonstrated history of expanding Data Science as a service within a company 
    • You possess the technical ability and business acumen to effectively communicate with both technical and business stakeholders - you’re as comfortable speaking with an Engineer as you are with a Salesperson
    • You love to recruit - you know how to identify Data Science talent and have a track record of hiring them 
    • You have working experience building models that have been deployed to production and have added tangible value to a business
    • You have extensive programming experience in a language such as Python or R
    • You have experience querying SQL databases and working with data in business intelligence tools like Tableau or Looker
    • You’ve worked with a variety of machine learning techniques such as clustering, dimensionality reduction and decision tree learning
    • You have experience with advanced statistical techniques such as regression, sampling, simulation, and time series forecasting

You’re miles ahead If:

    • You have a graduate degree in Data Science, Economics, Statistics, Mathematics or another STEM discipline
